All this on Merch by Amazon?

I sell print on demand through etsy. I don't like Merch by Amazon because they don't give enough you enough data and take over your customer service.
It's the same thing though, wait for customer to order, have order printed and dropshipped to them.

What site are you using to create your shirts/items if you don't mind saying?

Are your margins better with the Printful-Etsy method? I'm considering moving to another platform cause Amazon's percentage is BRUTAL.

And what do you mean Amazon didn't give you enough data?

I'm not sure on the margins I would have to look at Amazon's pricing again. I only sold a few shirts on Merch@Amazon before leaving. I would assume Etsy is better because with Merch you are also outsourcing your customer service to them.

Some things I can do selling on Etsy that I can't do selling on Amazon:
  • Get detailed data about my site traffic, where people are coming from, what search terms they used, how different tags/keywords I'm using are perfoming.
  • Ability to connect to Google Web Analytics to get even better data about who is visiting my site.
  • Ability to use Facebook Pixels on my Etsy listings, which gives me facebook demographic data on the people who visit my site.
  • Ability to collect data on people who visit my site (via Facebook Pixel) and then retarget those people with advertisements on instagram and facebook.
  • Ability to handle my own customer service.
  • Ability to sell directly on Instagram by connecting my Etsy listings to shoppable posts.
  • Better ability to control my own SEO.
  • Printful is not tied to Etsy, so I can always leave Etsy, take my Printful account with me and start my own site.
  • More products, I sold several hundred print on demand Valentine's Day cards in addition to things like shirts.
  • Trying to build a brand, which I feel like is easier on a site like Etsy since you get a better storefront.
I used to work for Amazon and the amount of info you get on your Merch@Amazon seller dashboard is complete trash compared to what someone who is doing like FBA gets. I felt like i was just blindly jamming keywords into my listings and hoping to get sales. Etsy I have a lot more control over everything and a lot more insight.

About to do two things to lower costs:
Switch from Printful to Gooten. I already use Gooten for some items but going to switch the rest. I will save about $3/shirt and $3/mug so I can lower costs AND also increase profit per item and profit margin.
Switch from Etsy to Shopfiy. I tried to do this last year but wasn't generating enough traffic to justify it. Hope 2nd time is the charm.

i was going to ask you what do you think about using shopify instead, you answered my question by saying you bout to try it

my other question is about Printful, the quality is bad, if i print a black shirt with white text, the white text comes out cracked when you examine it closely. If i get it printed from somewhere else like a local shop, then it comes out crystal clear. Although i think getting each order printed from a local shop then shipping it would be a headache. So my question is do people really care about the quality to that extent?

it depends, some do and some don't. (source: I work in custom printing retail customer svc. some customers are totally ok with it an some act like we murdered their kids)

working with a local print shop buying in bulk, youre prolly getting a screen printed item

for one off single shirts like this in dropshipping, its a decent chance they are using other print methods that arent the same as screen printing but offer comparable quality and are easier to do smaller runs of items.

ive fallen off on my shirt hustle some cuz I'm focusing back on trying to build a business around video production, but I want to re-structure my stuff this year and go thru a site like printful or gooten and take all my shyt off everything but redbubble, which is where I see the most sales (still not a ton tho, cuz I don't do any marketing).

based zedd seems to have a solid grasp on this all tho, shout out to that breh for getting it crackin

How do you feel about vinyl print

I think theres a place for it for sure, I think it all ultimately comes down to the design itself and its size and complexity

I wouldnt use vinyl print for a large or complex logo on a shirt cuz itll just make the shirt heavy, but for some small simple shyt, it might be a good move

but for smaller stuff its cool cuz of the texture. I see it used mainly for personalized names like on jerseys and stuff

I'm not sure how the cost of a vinyl print would compare to the cost of a screen print though

I got approved within two business days. I just submitted my first design, using gimp.

I love learning something, and then being able to apply it right away.

Thanks, OP. Repped!
