Not saying they didn't but he went overboard and then didn't give WWE a "5 star match" for like 20 years or something ridiculous like that.

Not even to defend Dave like that but AJPW was way better in ring than WWE in the 90s. Once they signed the Radicals, Kurt, and Jericho it ramped up. You could say he missed out on bunch during the 2000-2004 period for WWE for sure. But by the point it was just his opinion.

You basically have to treat Meltzer’s star ratings in two era. 2016 and earlier and then 2017 and later.

Five star matches were rare before 2017, now they happen like twice a month or more on average.

Like comparing NBA stats from the 90s to today. Two completely different eras.

There’s entire years where he didn’t give a single five-star match. Guy hands one out like every 2 weeks now.

Just can’t really compare the ratings from prior to 2017 to the 2017-present era.

ROH only has 7 total five+ star matches. Three of them are from the Briscoes vs. FTR trilogy

I don't think it's out of people's minds.. but AEW overall is cold. Even as hot as WWE is... nobody really discussing Sami/Gunther much anymore. We live in an era where there's so much wrestling and no room for anything to breathe and short attention spans.

Looking at Dave’s ratings since 2017…

5.75 stars is the equivalent of a five-star match from 2016 and earlier.

Most years prior to 2017 you’d generally get anywhere from 0-5 five-star matches

2017 had four matches rated 5.75+
2018 had two
2019 had three
2020 had one
2021 had two
2022 had two
2023 has five
2024 thus far has three.

So basically subtract 3/4 of a star from anything from 2017-present if you want to compare it from anything predating 2017

Still has some stuff out of “whack” like when he gave Ospreay-Danielson a 6.5.

But if I could have given that more than a 10 on Cagematch I would have done that too because that was demonstrably better than nearly every other match I’ve rated a 10/10 on there.

Kind of like at the NBA Dunk Contest when some guy gets a perfect score and another guy comes behind him with an obviously better dunk. They both end up with the same score because they can’t give a better score than a perfect score.
