Vince Vaughn Joins Mel Gibson’s WWII Drama ‘Hacksaw Ridge’
Vince Vaughn will star alongside Andrew Garfield in the Mel Gibson-directed World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge.”
The movie is based on the life of Desmond T. Doss, a medic and the first conscientious objector to win the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving dozens of soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. Garfield will portray Doss, a Seventh Day Adventist, who received two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts.
Vaughn, who stars in HBO’s “True Detective,” will play a sergeant preparing soldiers for battle. Doss’ story was the basis of the 2004 TV documentary “The Conscientious Objector.”
Robert Schenkkan and Randall Wallace wrote the screenplay for “Hacksaw Ridge,” which is being produced by David Permut and Bill Mechanic, and co-produced by with Terry Benedict and Steve Longi.
Army medic Desmond Doss single-handedly brought 75 wounded troops to safety while under constant fire on Okinawa on May 5, 1945. President Truman awarded him the Medal of Honor on October 12, 1945.
Drafted in April 1942, Desmond Doss refused to kill or carry a weapon into combat because of his personal beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist. He consequently became a medic, and while serving in the Pacific theatre of World War II he helped his country by saving the lives of his comrades, at the same time adhering to his religious convictions. Doss was wounded three times during the war, and shortly before leaving the Army he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which cost him a lung. Discharged from the Army in 1946, he spent five years undergoing medical treatment for his injuries and illness.
