Bah. As a Lions fan, I'm torn here.
On one hand, yeah...of COURSE, Calvin put in work here and earned every dollar he got from the organization. That goes without saying.
However, I can't help but feel mixed about the comments because I look at how the Lions play without him and who we let walk in order to keep him.
When Calvin was on the field, Stafford would constantly zero in on him and FORCE the ball to him. Once Calvin was out of the picture (whether through injury or post-retirement), you could see Stafford progress and spread the ball around. Maybe he felt obligated to get the ball to his no. 1 receiver or maybe Cal was just that big of a security blanket for him....but he's definitely become a better player post-Calvin....
...which makes me look back to when we essentially had to decide between Calvin and Suh. Back before he signed his contract, I said something along the lines of, "It sounds crazy now, but we should probably trade Calvin, get something for him, and throw the safe at Suh because we make more noise when our defense is disruptive. Matt seems too reliant on Calvin to ever grow."
Lions ended up losing them both with nothing to show for it. Guess it's hard to trade a player that good, but it's just a shytty situation all around now.
