she probably does have to pay back recording expenses, but that's normal.

The recording budget is recoupable.

Everybody from Drake, to J.Cole, to whoever is popping right now has to do that.

Regardless shes should still be making more than the 17-18 percent royalty split she would have gotten with any other label.
And labels don't even start paying you that until they fully recoup everything they spent on you.
