You really thinking people can't be threatened to sign a contract if something thinks they're going to bring them a lot of money? :comeon: Go read a damn book in the rain, fam. :camby:

Ol' "everyone's really respectfully when it comes to getting money", "We really want the best for you and respect your wishes, we'll let your financial potential to us walk away " :mjlol:
This shyt is CRAZY!!!!! Dude!!! Details! Drop details. This ain’t the type of shyt I usually think about after my first morning cup of coffee.

That's the craziest part about it. Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, and Chamillionaire turned themselves into millionaires selling CDs out they trunk, Meg has FAAAR more tools at her disposal and she still signed a slave ass contract. :what:
I don't know a lot about Meg's background, but from the surface they came up a lot different than her.

Slim Thug was speaking in depth about not really wanting to be on a major label due to them wanting to control him and the amount of content he could drop around the time his Already Platinum album came out.

Slim, Paul & Chamillionaire, and Mike Jones were already popping in the underground scene years before they were getting national airplay as well. I remember the days of Wreckshop Records and later Swishahouse Records long before those guys started getting love outside of Texas and Louisiana.

Megan seems like she was a college girl probably doing this as a hobby and some man offered her a little bread (10K isn't a lot of money), but it is to a college kid probably eating off the dollar menu at Mickey Ds and staying in some matchbox dorm room. She took the money and probably got to travel around the country and open for more established artists and get her travel, food, and hotel rooms paid for. I can see the allure of that for a young mind.

She started popping a little bit then getting radio airplay and now all of a sudden shes a star and household name and she wants to move on to bigger and better things, but she didn't have an attorney to go over the fine print in that deal like she should have and she's going to end up having to pay him to get out that deal or shes going to have to release those albums.

On the real, Megan needs this guy right here to manage her career.

I swear with all the insider knowledge a lot of this Coli brehs got, some of ya’ll could run a record label better than some of these mega companies.
Megan ain’t bout that life.

Fukk it, WE need to pitch the idea to Netflix!:russ:

Don't give the lurkers an idea, I am 100% Meg's people are on The Coli browsing....

She had two choices, be an independent and grind on Soundcloud, own all her rights and collab for features, THEN sign with a label OR sign the crappy contract but get a big marketing push....this isn't the NBA where your skills and talent warrant a large salary out the gate, this is music, not for the faint of heart.

Megan could be the John Walsh of the music industry. Start an artist support hotline, hook up new talent with a network of lawyers and advocates.

Megan: “Have you been scouted by a major record company? Does it sound too good to be true? Before you sign on the dotted line call 1-800-RECONSIDER! It’s a support hotline for upcoming artists to provide advice and counseling! We are here for you! AHHHHH” (sticks out her tongue)

This little 2 minutes of fame wave that she was on - she can't even make income off her IG page without them having a percentage. This chick did absolutely no research on her contract or finances- dumb as hell. I never rocked with Nikki, but at least she had sense and the smarts to know her worth at the time, for what it was worth. Nikki started off small, doing collabos with Trina - with that "5 star chick" wave and then progressed when she got a feel for the feedback. Nikki played her position until it was time to branch out and maneuver. Meg thought she could really just jump out the window with her "look at me, look at my ass, I rap fast" carnival circuit twerk shyt without assessing the situation first. This is embarrassing - did she even look to see what happened to Tierra Marie or Cherri Dennis at RocNation before signing on the dotted line. Matter of fact, the 3 of them need to do a "artist support" start up.
:dahell:
That's if, Meg doesn't come up missing first, she has affiliated and connected dudes in her financials.

This sounds like the most reasonable shyt ever. That 10k was like a student loan refund check...
Hell come to think of it Sallie Mae and these Record Labels got a lot in common...:mjlol:
Access to young barely legal millennials who can be easily seduced with a little change.

In undergrad, I used to wait tables and I had scholarships so I used to get an overage too. Fresh outta high school, my refund check was $2500 one semester. It was the most money I ever had at once in my life. So 10k would have been a big deal for me in undergrad too.:yeshrug:
Khalid wasn’t lying with “Young, Dumb and Broke”.

Im also laughing at the image of Sallie Mae Records...LMAO’:mjlol:
Hell I think student loan companies might even be more ruthless. Suge ain’t got shyt on Navient!:laff:Jesus Christ. There are so many ways to take Ls in life.

Damn. This shyt just makes me think about entertainment in general and contracts as well.

They basically just exchanging wealth for fame. I’m slowly learning that the two aren’t interchangeable.:wow:
The benefit of signing with a big record label is exposure and resources I guess, but none of it is free.
You gon either pay upfront or on the backend with interest.

So how can an artist in one of these crappy deals make it work for them?

Back in the day, there was this British punk band called The Damned. One of the first, actually. They weren't particularly smart.

When they were signed, their manager sat them down, and gave them a choice: "Do you want to be rich, or do you want to be famous?" The "or" should have tipped them off. However, they chose "fame" since they thought one would follow the other.

They became famous (notorious is more of the right word). For instance, they were the first UK punk band to tour the United States...but they ultimately didn't earn shyt in the long run.

I got like $1,500 one year and thought I was balling too. That was the most money I ever had up to that point in time.

I blew through that money in a week or two.

College is a hustle and the long game you leave drowning in loan debt to go work a job making 40K-60K in most areas not named New York or California unless you have a juris doctorate, degree to become an MD, or an engineer or something along those lines.

Most of the degreed jobs you start off at the bottom and you have to build your resume and get years of experience before you start seeing the fruits of your labor. Meanwhile Sallie Mae wants her money back while all this is going on too.

Megan still should have been smarter and had an attorney who specializes in those type of contracts to review that before she signed anything though.
