Insignificance is relative, so what are you basing that on? If we are merely random accidents of evolution... then what was the point for the universe expanding in the first place?
I think what he means is relative to the universe, what humans do now on this one tiny planet, is insignificant.
The point is there is no point for the universe expanding. It was just an event that happened. And from that, the laws of nature were such that the formation and evolution of life was practically inevitable. I always sort of wince when people describe evolution as "random", because that implies different things. The process is indeed guided, just not by anything supernatural ... as far as we can tell.
