Based on what I’m reading. Lori was stuck in the middle with no way out. She lost to Johnson who is to the left of her and Vallas who is to the right of her.
If she cracked down people would complain, crooks get down she takes the blame
yeah, talk about a thankless job
being a big city mayor sounds awful
She fumbled her entire term by being a narcissist. That's the gods honest truth brehs. Watched it happen in slow motion. She could've been one of the greats but she has the worst tendencies of modern politicians (inability to acknowledge your own mistakes/pettiness + giving clueless urban white liberals w/ good intentions too much sway).
You gotta realize she won with like 70% of the vote. Obama coalition on steroids. She won historically Black wards, working and middle class, conservative white wards, hispanics, downtown and neighborhoods. She defeated the machine, single handedly.
One of the first things she did was take away some of the power from local aldermen. They hated it but the people respected her for it bc historically aldermen used that to enrich themselves. It was one of the major sources of corruption. It hurt businesses bc aldermen would use the power to shut down/slow down permitting or licensing process. They would get shook down for campaign contributions etc. Usually mayors let the aldermen run wild and in exchange the aldermen wouldn't actually do their jobs and let the mayor run wild.
This is how shyt like the Parking Meter deal was approved. The last mayor Daley leased the city's parking meters, for 75 years, to an investment group, put together by Morgan Stanley (where his brother worked and where he himself would land after becoming mayor) for $1.2 Billion up front. That money was spent almost immediately to fill massive budget deficits that Daley presided over. Because he let the aldermen do whatever they wanted, they were just a rubber stamp and voted for this deal even though everyone realized it was a shyt sandwich. As of last year the investment group had already received $1.7 BILLION. Annual payments are more than $200 MILLION, and there is still 60 years left on the contract.
When COVID hit she was a mini celebrity and although people clowned her a little bit and there were always people that hated the shutdown - most people continued to give her the benefit of the doubt.
But the way she responded to criticism was just so petty. She would "punch down" at her employees, be super disrespectful even to her allies/supporters -- ESPECIALLY if they were Black. Her team was always filled with these clueless white people. And the turnover in her office was insane. With the crime stuff, she would try and play both sides, which is somewhat understandable but bc she would only listen to the clueless white liberal types, she would get into these pointless fights with police even when most people in areas with high crime didn't really care about the controversy of the day/week. That's not to excuse/justify slick shyt that police would do, but remember that she won the wards where cops and their families lived by CRAZY margins.
She brought in a new police chief and treated him like shyt almost immediately. And by choosing someone who wasn't even from Chicago, it was a big slap in the face and only confirmed that she just wanted a yes man who would know that his job depended on serving her political purposes first.
A bunch of internal emails/text messages were released pursuant to a lawsuit and it just added fuel to the fire of her poor leadership style. She never even attempted to address/acknowledge what everyone in the world knew - even people who liked her and were likely to vote for her.
Like many other people with that kind of personality style, they never believe people are going to turn on them until it's too late. They just can't imagine that there would be people who don't appreciate them the way they believe they should be appreciated/admired.
She could've been mayor for life if she wanted, or run for governor after Pritzker leaves, national office like senator etc. Chicago is going to explode (in a good way) the next couple of years bc of the investment coming in post covid. She would've been able to soak in all of that praise/credit. I have sympathy for her bc for most people, personality traits are a reflection of past experiences and im sure being Black, gay, not physically attractive created all kinds of insecurities that stay with you even into older age. But once you reached the top you cant let that shyt control you anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if she came back around in 4 years if the next mayor is a disaster but my guess is that things will be going well in the city so she's probably done for good.
