not only that, income inequality stresses people which makes them ever more prone to violence. I've point out in a few threads how the lack of money appears to be the root issue in a lot of tragic news stories.
One theory on FiveThirtyEight podcast was that pandemics historically deteriorate civility/interpersonal skills, and that data suggests that we actually saw a very similar increase in violence after the Spanish Flu in 1918.

Either way, this idea of what is causing the violence is a constructive conversation that needs to be had, but it is a lot more nuanced and hard to reach a conclusive plan of what is needed to get ourselves back on track as a city/country/civilization.

To come full circle tho, it's easy for someone on Twitter to blame Adams for an increase in media coverage even tho their's a real increase in crime. It's also lazy AF and doesn't actually solve the root issue which is not the type of Democratic Party that I can get behind. It's lazy and not something I'd expect from educated Democratic reporters. There's plenty to hold Adams accountable for without turning him into a scapegoat for every problem in the world a la Republicans & Liz Cheney. I think it's our responsibility to hold people accountable when their takes are off base and will hurt Democrats and democracies in the long run.

And this doesn't negate the fact that there are alternatives available outside of gov't subsidizing private employers underpaying their workers. Progressivism is about finding solutions, not excusing people who are committing violent crimes that are ineligible for bail reform and other progressive policies that are enacted.
Where did I say the government should subsidize employers? I said the government should give people money. Raise the minimum wage, etc

The crimes that have gone up aren’t murder and rape, but crimes of need. Desperate people, unfortunately, do desperate things. Let’s make them not desperate.

You are insinuating that the government and FiveThirtyEight want to lock up people which in 2022 is a Republican talking point
In 2022, that is a mainstream political talking point because both parties are mainstream advocates. Remember, this discussion started with NYC‘s DEMOCRATIC PARTY government advocating for more law enforcement. One of 2022 Democratic Party platforms is to fund the police.

The Illegal License Plate Covers Are Coming From Inside the Adams Administration

The Brooklyn director of the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit was driving a Jeep with illegal license plate covers and flashing police lights.

In July, Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference to announce a crackdown on "ghost cars," vehicles driven by people who use fake or obscured license plates. "This is a city of law and order, not lawlessness and disorder," Adams told reporters.

Mayor Adams didn't need to look too hard to find a "ghost car" driver. Until very recently, Tony Herbert, the Brooklyn director of the Mayor's Community Affairs Unit, drove a black Jeep outfitted with lights, sirens, and a plainly illegal device that covered the license plates at the touch of a button.

When Hell Gate reached out to the Mayor’s Office to inquire about Herbert’s “ghost car,” we were told that the illegal features had been removed. "We take these allegations very seriously, and, after investigating, have determined that all of these devices were disassembled or have been inoperable for some time now," Kayla Mamelak, a spokesperson for Mayor Adams, wrote Hell Gate in an email. "We will take all necessary corrective measures to ensure this doesn’t happen again."

If Herbert's Jeep has lacked lights and the license plate cover "for some time now," it would have been after October 22, which is when we spotted it on Schenectady Avenue in Crown Heights at the scene of a traffic fatality, sporting Thin Blue Line stickers and Freemason decals.

The same Jeep, with a Mayor’s Office parking placard on the dash, was also spotted parked in a crosswalk outside of a Brooklyn precinct in August, during the precinct’s National Night Out Against Crime event. The license plates were rendered invisible by the drop-down covers, according to photos and video sent in by a tipster.

Herbert, a longtime community activist, told Hell Gate in a phone call on Thursday night that he did not have lights and sirens on his vehicle, and then hung up.

Last year, Herbert ran an unsuccessful campaign for Public Advocate, in which he appeared on the Conservative Party ballot line. He's talked about his closeness to Mayor Adams. “I’ve worked with him prior to that, when he was a borough president, when he was a senator,” Herbert said of Mayor Adams in an interview from earlier this year. “Given the opportunity, this man is going to help turn this city around, and that’s why I decided to work with him.”

Herbert also appears to be rather cozy with law enforcement. He is often pictured with a badge, most likely issued to him in his capacity as the mayor's liaison. Herbert was reportedly one of the organizers of a 2020 Blue Lives Matter march over the Brooklyn Bridge. Earlier this year, he threatened those who wanted to protest over the return of the NYPD's plainclothes unit with citizens' arrest.

The Mayor’s Office did not answer our questions about the details of Herbert’s employment, though his LinkedIn page lists his start date with the Mayor’s Office as February 2022. City payroll data shows that Herbert's annual salary is $83,981. A City website calls the Community Affairs Unit “the fundamental connection between City Hall and New York City residents throughout the five boroughs," essentially the eyes and ears of the Mayor's Office, showing up to community events and crime scenes.

Even with the plate-covering gadget, the car has racked up 23 violations since 2020, including two red light tickets and 14 school zone speeding tickets, the most recent of which came in early October.

A DMV spokesperson said department policy is to not comment on specific cases, but pointed to state law that prohibits lights and sirens from being used on nongovernmental vehicles like this one.

Someone needs to hold him accountable

:snoop:

But it is located on Randalls Island, a windy and out-of-the-way corner of the city. The island also houses other homeless shelters, but is perhaps best known for hosting summer music festivals and as the entrance to a turbulent tidal strait called Hell Gate.

The island contains no homes or businesses and the location was criticized almost immediately by members of the City Council, who said it could be inhumane in cold weather. Occupants of the tent had to go outside to use the bathroom and retrieve their belongings from lockers to do their laundry.

Joshua Goldfein, a staff lawyer for the Legal Aid Society, which represents the group that monitors conditions at city homeless shelters, also said the facility did not comply with city rules that governed “congregate settings” because the beds were too close together and too many of them were crammed into one room. Legal Aid had also received complaints from migrants who said the heating system in the tent did not keep it warm enough, he said.

He applauded the city decision to shut down the facility on Thursday.

“It’s like they developed a model that didn’t take into account all of the experience that the city has for decades for how to provide services to people,” Mr. Goldfein said. “They wanted to reinvent the wheel and people were not comfortable with that, and also they were cold.”

this move makes sense. :ehh:

NYC Mayor Eric Adams backed by right wing tabloids & lawmakers, used police lies about this 16 year old teenager, to scare New Yorkers into believing successful bail reform was actually a “disaster.” Case was dismissed. And no one will be held accountable.

New York rapper C Blu charges are dropped. The teen was accused of shooting an NYPD officer. A judge determined that cops had no reason to approach C Blu in the first place.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams rejects data & spreads copaganda that NY bail reform has caused crime rise in his fight to cage 1000s more pretrial.

But when *he* gets blamed, he acknowledges violent crime rates higher everywhere. Including places w/ no reform.
