Its like this: prior to 1999, Hip Hop was a distant #2 selling genre, behind those boybands. They didn't do the gay shyt then because cats like Nas, Wu Tang , DMX/ Ruff Ryders, Jay-Z, and Ice Cube because they would physically harmed execs without hesitation, and connected to drug lords.

After DMX and Eminem blew up, everyone faked being a thug and became a Tupac clone, they turned rap into a corporate business instead of a wildcard hustle that was secondary towards record company profits.
