It’s okay, so far. Weird to say after everything that’s transpired, but the show still lacks a certain flair of energy. I think it’s due to the storytelling more than anything, as the character development isn’t there for me. Show has also been promoting itself with Butler as the main lead and he just comes across as a caricature of a WW2 solider so far. I can tell he’s still coming off of that Elvis role here.
Apple has been on a roll lately but a part of me still wishes this got picked up by HBO. Most of the dogfight sequences look like they came straight out of a PS3-era videogame cutscene. Which is weird when I notice the budget being higher than HOTD. It’s a minor distraction in a show that otherwise has fine direction, and not the end-all-be-all. Even BoB had dodgy CGI in the few scenes that featured it so I’ll manage. I believe they got Fukunaga directing four of the episodes though, in addition with vets like Boden and Fleck, Van Patten. So the show seems to be in good company there.
Nothing against Keoghan also, but the man is usually typecasted as the outsider weirdo in everything I see him in. And especially coming from having watched ‘Saltburn’, it’s weird to see him in a role where he has to actually lead others and command respect, lol. Good on him though for changing things up.
