I had to look it up
in the comics, Stark never paid the avengers outright but gave them weekly stipends from the Maria Stark Foundation so it didn't look like they were working for him.
Most of the avengers decline the offer
In the movies it's never explained I guess Stark was like you're living in my compound, with a stocked fridge and rooms all to yourselves.
could've used the excuse that Sam was a fugitive until very recently so he had no income even prior to the Thanos snap and they consider him a liability due to his adventures
give them Stark Shares at least though
this is why the defenders never connected besides obvious reasons they would be in the middle of the fight trying to pay off a credit card bill
