I think its also partly him not giving a fukk anymore too. Even if he didn't want to maintain the workout regime, we've seen that before, those actors usually get smaller as they lose muscle mass. Check chris evans and hemworth when they don't have to bulk up for a while. He's gaining weight and getting rounder.
Him getting fatter has to do with his diet and discipline, not a lack of rigorous workouts and strength training.
