MoS was pretty dark, the pa kent death and the zod death was pretty brutal.

Especially according to the director. She said that Kevin and marvel had their opinions but ultimately lionsgate had the final say and lionsgate paid the bills so it was a marvel movie in name only

Actually that was Lionsgate that made/distributed Punisher: War Zone with little to no input from Marvel.
Now I've gotta admit that I love the hell outta this flick but dark it was not.

Most of the action in this was cheesy over the top fun in an 80s movie vibe.

Yup. And she said that was the only way to make it because she read the comics and said it was silly. She didn't fathom how anyone could take it seriously so that's the direction she went. Although it does have some poignant stuff with frank and his code and feeling like he should be punished
