Ed O’Neill’s performance in the show was brilliant, he hadn’t really done comedy before. His most notable role was playing Popeye Doyle in a TV movie.

He actually played college football and tried out for the Steelers; he got cut by Chuck Noll. He played against Roger Staubach when Roger was in the Navy. He was doing various odd jobs for awhile and one of the MWC producers saw him acting in a dramatic play and thought he would be good for the Al role.
