-- With John Cena away from the company for so long, Roman Reigns has now overtaken him as WWE's top wrestler for merchandise sales. This would likely be a significant contributing reason why WWE has stayed committed to him as the centerpiece of the promotion despite the audience reaction.

-- The same thing happened with Cena himself in years past as he was getting negative reactions at the live events but his merch sales were "through the roof" which is likely when Vince McMahon stopped caring about his top faces getting booed.

Oh, there were people wearing roman's gear at SDL live and raw. It wasn't just kids ethier. His gear just doesn't stick out like Cena's, Bullet Club, the Hardy's or Styles's gear.

I was gonna say it’s the usual cooking the books where they make 5-6 times as much Roman merch as anyone else and way oversupply his while short supplying everyone else’s and turning the most over faces heel like with cena during his run, but this theory is a real eye opener
