Maidana throwing 100 punches per round in training for Mayweather

By Jeff Sorby | Published August 20, 2014

It seems pretty obvious that Marcos Maidana’s plan to try and beat WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) in their rematch next month is to overwhelm him with punches by throwing as many shots as possible as possible on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maidana is reportedly throwing over 100 punches per round during his sparring sessions with the likes of Steve Forbes and Mikey Garcia. In throwing that many punches, Maidana obviously doesn’t have much time to think a lot about throwing the perfect shot because he’s just looking to overwhelm his sparring partners with shots rather than picking his shots.

Maidana wants to get in good enough shape to where he’ll be able to average that many punches per round when he gets in the ring with Mayweather on 9/13. Of course, Maidana will need Mayweather to stand still against the ropes like he did last time they fought each other last May at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather tried to pick off Maidana’s shots using his shoulder roll defense, but because of the sheer volume of shots that Maidana was throwing at him, Mayweather couldn’t stop them all, and he ended up getting hit quite a few times by the hard punches by Maidana.

Mayweather can spoil Maidana’s plans for throwing 100 punches per round by not standing in one place for any length of time. He needs to stay moving constantly and not Maidana get his feet set to start throwing his shots. If Mayweather is able to move constantly for 12 rounds, then Maidana’s plan of overwhelming Mayweather with punches will be spoiled.

Maidana’s plan is perfect for the Mayweather that fought him last May, but it might not work if we see a different, more mobile Mayweather on September 13th. Maidana and his trainer Robert Garcia are both counting on Mayweather not having the stamina to stay off the ropes for the entire fight.

100 punches a round?:ohhh:

Marcos Maidana about to get on his "Paul Williams" against Floyd:wow:

Unfortunately for him, Floyd will be on the move so this game plan is not going to work at all:heh:

volume punching and outworking route huh? interesting..maidana also better train on effectively cutting the ring off on Floyd too

it makes sense. when you really look at it, does floyd does floyd ever fights a full 3 or even 2 minutes a round? its more like a minute and some change. floyd still a defensive fighter by heart, something that teddy atlas always points out is, that floyd always give opportunities when on the ropes to be outworked. i think that if floyd were to be outworked it will be something ugly like calzaghe like when he edge out a decision against hopkins. i thought chino did good work when floyd was on the ropes, until he gassed.

Everyone always said this shyt. Every time Floyd has a new opponent "we're gonna outwork him and put volume"; except when it came to finally do it they got p*ssy in the ring. Marcos was the first one to actually do it and it fukked with floyd cause marcos had NO respect :dead:

My nikka knew he only had one way to win and that was knockout and knew Floyd couldn't knock him out :banderas:

they wanted to do it, they just couldnt
floyd was a lil off his game that fight for whatever reason dat fight
might be age, distractions, or mayb just a off night period
as long as floyd counters maidana when he tries that wild shyt and stays off the ropes, it should be a easy fight
i remember he was on the ropes a lot during the cotto fight too (right before going to jail)

hope it dont turn into roy jones with dat shyt:lupe:

Shouldn't be a problem just like it wasn't a problem last time. Floyd doesn't have the best footwork. It's decent but what keeps opponents from rushing in like Chino did last fight is his timing, defense, and counterpunching. Chino just doesn't give a shyt about any of that. :heh:

I got Chino in a decision for a number of reasons but outworking is just one of them.
