I can't remember where I saw it but the original video said he died. A lot of articles say he survived but the brain swelling and skull injuries surely killed him. The helmet didn't do anything

That helmet he was wearing was open faced. Those aren't known for their ability to fully protect the way a full-face helmet does.
Same difference between safety in a convertible VS a full car.

I would bet that he died from injuries.
