The average monthly rent for a one bed room apartment in SF is almost $4,000 a month...that's $48,000 a year off top. Let's assume you pay roughly $37,000 in Fed and State taxes that brings you to $85,000.

That leaves you with $39,000 a year or $3,250 a month to handle the rest of your expenses/debt or whatever. So if $124K in SF isn't enough then something might we wrong with the way you handle your expenses brehs. Unless you're like OPs boss and have alimony and child support to pay, but if you're riding solo $124K is enough for you to get by without living paycheck to paycheck.

I can agree with some of what you are stating, but 401k is pre tax. If he claims 2 on his taxes he will get more through out the year and get less back in taxes. The whole liberal city argument is mute in that you will pay in some form or another. In texas it is property taxes. Other places you pay high property tax and high car registrations. Weather lib or repub you will pay regardless. I did not mean to come off as an a$$ if that is how I sound. I think we are of a similar mind on certain aspects.

Agreed, but places such as NYC will make that $120K different than $120K in Oklahoma City, Indianapolis or even Phoenix. Liberal cities tax more. Paycheck amounts/how far your money goes are relative to your location. Some cities have city taxes and an exceptionally high sales tax.

The coli is a fictional land
No one is unemployed

No one is making under 90k

Everyone has a Audi BMW
A house or waterfront condo
A dime for a gf or wife

No debt at all
And we all got mad saving accounts, hella money in 401K, have at least 1-2 sideline bytches, go out to eat and drink 2-3 times a week at expensive spots and lounges or able to, and have Kevin Hart and Chris Rock type sense of humor with strong mouthpieces and look down on those who don't...ohh and able to go on vacations at least twice a year and can easily take our main or sidelines with us...

Take home from 120K in San Fran is about $80K. Median rent for a 1 bedroom is $3-4K, so already you're down $40-50K. Then you have to have a car to get around.... judging by my experience in NY and inflation, that's another $5-6K. Pretty sure you will need parking... another $3-5K. So we just ate up $50-60K of your take home, and you haven't even started to pay down student loans, eat or pay utilities yet.

Yes, $120K is peanuts if you live in a large city and want to live like the rich and famous.
A lot of people have no choice but to live in a large city to do their jobs. There's nothing glamorous about living in a $4000/mo 500 sq ft apartment with a roommate... but that's the reality for a lot of high earners.

OP's coworker's problems stem from poor decisions more than anything, but like I said if you have no choice but to live in an expensive city and have crazy student loans $120K can definitely be not enough. No need to get angry or judgmental

You are correct in that There will be a lot more 120k jobs in the coastal metro areas. In the cities you names there are a lot less 120k jobs compared to larger metro areas. Also multiplicities that invest more in the community usually have higher taxes because more goods and services are provided by that city. That is usually in the form of higher corporate, property and sales taxes. You are correct in that you paycheck stretches more depending on where you live.

That dude has made some bad decisions.

Unfortunately when you have (a wife and) kids, that 120k can start to stretch a bit. You can definitely make it work (tons of people do on less) but it all depends on your lifestyle choices. Many people aren't prudent with their finances and become a slave to their job.

Not angry. Maybe a bit judgmental :ld:

Well, in my experience, there's always options. Less expensive options to be exact. Those people can decide to live outside of downtown or outside the city. But they don't want to do that, so they have to make certain choices. Like having a roommate.

Peace
