George Bush #41 is the only one you could say was truly qualified and smart. College World Series champ at Yale, WW2 fighter pilot, successful businessman, CIA director and Vice President all BEFORE he got into office. People disagreed with him but no one ever said he was dumb. Probably one of the smarter presidents but just didn't have charm/political skills.
Contrast that with Reagan, Bush #43 and Trump. None of those dudes were considered to be especially smart and GOP loved them precisely because they were "regular."
Clinton and Obama by contrast were always considered very intelligent. Even if they make mistakes its not because they're dummies. Biden is looked at as old and senile but he's not dumb either...especially compared to Trump.

Republicans are ruthless. They don't actually care about the people elected. If they are stupid or completely amoral, the better. If they are stupid, then they won't question the decision makers and influencers in the party. They will just blindly follow orders. Sadly, democrat voters don't have the same privilege of their elected officials following what the majority of their people want. They do the exact opposite and often don't suffer consequences. Yet, long established Republicans who took a stand on Jan 6th are getting tossed in the bushes left and right and getting replaced with more ideological yes men.
