This was absolutely phenomenal, easily top 5 of the year.:wow:

It is a very demanding watch, seeing as they stuck largely to the ol' timey Shakespeare dialog and it is delivered in whispering Scottish accents, so if you're not paying close attention to the dialog all the damn time, you'll utterly fail at following it. That's the same reason btw that I only rarely watch my favorite film of all time, Orson Welles' Chimes At Midnight, because it's equally as demanding.

Regardless of that, this might be my favorite adaptation of the story ever, even more so than Welles' MacBeth (also a very demanding sit through, and should I mention I really fukking love Orson Welles?). It was beautifully shot and Fassbender was goddamn incredible. That might really be the performance of the year, his whole descent into madness is godly to watch. Cotillard was pretty good as well, her accent wasn't really solid and occasionally she came off flat but overall this is her best English-speaking effort by far. Also nothing but accolades for Sean Harris. It took me a while to remember where I knew him from but he played the bad guy in the last Mission: Impossible (in which he was also great), and the man is an actor to keep track off because he does the damn thing.

Matter of fact, after long consideration my only issue with the movie is that there's like two or three moments where there's child actors in the background who didn't seem all that impressed with (or had a clue about) what's going on. Like Fassbender and Paddy Considine are having one hell of an intense dialog exchange, and the kid that the entire exchange is about just stands around looking bored like :francis:. Or in the execution scene of MacDuff's family and Fassbender and Cottilard are selling all this madness and conflict, and then it cuts to two of the boys about to be executed at the hands of this madness, and they're just looking on like :dwillhuh:. shyt was so off-putting, it might literally be the only reason I wouldn't give this a perfect score. Because it is very close to a perfect picture.

I knew you would love it since i didn't care for it :pachaha:

I saw that post in the other thread and it made me wonder what the hell you were expecting. But then I remembered that beneath all the pretensions of being a film fanatic you're still a filthy pleb.

Did you see it in a theater?

I wish i had. As you mentioned it's demanding and there are too many distractions at home. Like this is not holding my attention, let me scroll through my phone

Nah, saw it at home because it still doesn't have a distributor over here. There have been rumblings that the production companies involved played hard to get for the distribution rights of the strength of the buzz at Cannes, hoping for a bidding war that never happened. So it was nowhere to be found this awards season and fell off the radar to the point distributors don't even care for it anymore.

I really loved the color tones and direction...the constant reds and blacks, loved many of the scenes, Cotilard and Fassbender were very impressive, I didn't like the exclusion of the witches, or their new interpretation much. I thought as a whole the movie came off slight.....gorgeous direction, brutal violence, strong acting, but emotionally it felt flat....could be I am just a little out of practice on my Shakespeare, though I usually see one play of his a year, and have seen many. It felt without much real emotion or agony...I saw this is the theater back in December, it was gone in about a week here.

Finally caught this at the weekend. I'm with @TheGodling on this one.

Sean Harris absolutely KILLS it as Macduff.

I've always thought Macbeth worked better on film than on stage - this might be the best version I've ever seen.

I think I might've even preferred this to the Fiennes Coriolanus the other year.

I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
:obama:Yeah, this looks like piff. I'm a huge MacBeth and Hamlet stan, and I think Fassbender is perfect for this role. Not sure about Cotillard though. :patrice: Still salty about her horrible death scene in TDKR, but maybe she can redeem herself here.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the story, here are some funny cliff notes :pachaha:

I'm a King Lear stan, myself. :obama:
