This was absolutely phenomenal, easily top 5 of the year.
It is a very demanding watch, seeing as they stuck largely to the ol' timey Shakespeare dialog and it is delivered in whispering Scottish accents, so if you're not paying close attention to the dialog all the damn time, you'll utterly fail at following it. That's the same reason btw that I only rarely watch my favorite film of all time, Orson Welles' Chimes At Midnight, because it's equally as demanding.
Regardless of that, this might be my favorite adaptation of the story ever, even more so than Welles' version (should I mention I really fukking love Orson Welles?). It was beautifully shot and Fassbender was goddamn incredible. That might really be the performance of the year, his whole descent into madness is godly to watch. Cotillard was pretty good as well, her accent wasn't really solid and occasionally she came off flat but overall this is her best English-speaking effort by far. Also nothing but accolades for Sean Harris. It took me a while to remember where I knew him from but he played the bad guy in the last Mission: Impossible (in which he was also great), and the man is an actor to keep track off because he does the damn thing.
Matter of fact, after long consideration my only issue with the movie is that there's like two or three moments where there's child actors in the background who didn't seem all that impressed with (or had a clue about) what's going on. Like Fassbender and Paddy Considine are having one hell of an intense dialog exchange, and the kid that the entire exchange is about just stands around looking bored like
. Or in the execution scene of MacDuff's family and Fassbender and Cottilard are selling all this madness and conflict, and then it cuts to two of the boys about to be executed at the hands of this madness, and they're just looking on like
. shyt was so off-putting, it might literally be the only reason I wouldn't give this a perfect score. Because it
is very close to a perfect picture.
