Hence the "need white validation" comments. Some blacks are so happy to get pats on the head or crumbs off of whitey's table that they don't even want to question the motives. This is why tokenism works like a charm to pacify blacks. "so what if they're putting Lupita on a pedastal after spending centuries convincing the world that her features are inferior.........at least they trying"
I don't have a problem with her being on a cover by the way. I just don't think it validates her beauty nor does it signify any changes to the current standards of beauty. I'll be impressed when there's more than one dark skinned natural black woman being appreciated.
No offense, but this is childish.
First of all, why are you outraged that white people would prop up white women as the most beautiful? Isn't that normal? If you had a magazine wouldn't you prop up black women as the most beautiful?
Beauty is subjective. White people like white women, black people like black women, asians like asian women,
martians like martian women.
Second of all, who is "they"? I get that white people, but who? Did they poll every white man in America and they said "yeah give it to Lupita as a token?"
Or did the Council of White Supremacy directly contact People magazine and ordered them to placate black people and give Lupita the award?
The bottom line is that this award is given to people who are both popular and beautiful. Lupita is both. So she got the award. Only a person who is really looking hard for something to feel offended about would take issue with this.
