Lol, I was going to say this. I don't doubt that Lyor is a snake, but his music was trash, more promo wouldn't have changed that.
Lasers was the Atlantic record that they handed him - and it was a very popular album; the first single went double platinum :dead:

The other two songs we know Atlantic handed him went like 6x and 3x platinum: Airplanes and Nothin On You

But what does that have to do with him putting out garbage music? :gucci:

After he dropped the cool, he released weed plate after weed plate after weed plate…
He's released great albums and mixtapes after the Cool
I mean hasn’t he now been allow to make the music he wants for a decade plus now
He's given us Tetsuo & Youth, Drogas WAVE, Samurai, and Drill Music In Zion - plus the Lost in the Atlantic mixtape, Pharaoh Heights, and the Virgil Abloh tribute.

I agree, but if an artist wants to be independent, they need to do everything themselves or hire people to do it for them. That’s hard, when you don’t have a lot of money to invest and you don’t have a great deal of knowledge of the music business.
Being on a label, if you arent super successful, is even harder.

Obviously it is a lot of work still but its never been easier to create and put out your own content.

I love Lupe but that’s his side of the story. Listen to him, he’s willing to do a 360, but he know some people who know some people? He got the shirt hook up, distribution, designer , and everything else.

Why the hell would he be interested in a 360 deal then?

Go do it on your own.
For the music promotion and support.

Doing all of that on your own can be detrimental.

Look at Kanye: both he and Lupe had similar ideas of expansion into art, fashion, and video games - but Kanye had a lot more label support and control over his 360 to take his reach to the next level.

Lupe was trying to work with Goyard before they fukked with hip-hop, a Bathing Ape, and Virgil Abloh before white fashion houses accepted him

:unimpressed:

I don't care anymore

But lol @ Lupe fans protesting and jumping up and down for Lasers release only for it to drop and be the worst shyt ever

One of the biggest send offs in hip-hop history
Lasers wasn't that bad, just have it a spin a week or two ago and it was absolutely an overhated album.

Even worse - it sold well and had a really popular single. The other single criticized the U.S. support of Israel's attacks on Gaza, 9/11, environmental policy, and the Obama administration - easily one of the biggest anti-establishment records of the last 15 years and one that got him in actual governmental trouble

Kanye was also far more talented than Lupe and had superior pop sensibilities. Do I agree that Atlantic is a terrible label for rap and Lyor is a cancer? Yes. But at the end of the day Lupe did what they wanted - record those terrible pop reference track singles - whereas Kanye made pop rap songs that were actually good and stood the test of time. Part of the bitterness Lupe has is that he played the mainstream label game and couldn't last, and then got replaced by a generation that did all of that better than him. Sideline Story and Take Care came out about 6-8 months after Lasers. GKMC came out the following year.

It’s not an online talking point. Lupe said it. He said when they were discussing the deal, he told them how he knows a designer, t shirt person, and distributor.

What i'm saying is that DIY idea is one parroted by people who have all the answers except for why they haven't done it themselves.

even if he knew all them folks, there is no guarantees he'd have the resources to finance some of these things.... and in the event that things went left, the lawyers to handle all that.

the anti-360 deal campaign never accounted for the fact that the labels have far more resources and ability at scale to do for you what you'd want than you could do for yourself.

Good point

In a perfect world Lupe gets off majors early in his career (maybe after the Cool) and figures out how to Directly feed his fan base with mixtapes and albums.

Live off touring and Merch like spitta does

But Lupe is probably to stubborn for that.

What people discount is that Currensy is one of the fortunate rappers where transitioning to an independent career path has worked out for him....and this was AFTER 2 major label deals where things didn't go right for him....a few years to the left or to the right and it doesn't happen.

Currensy somehow came out of deals with Master P and Birdman without any horror stories...and that's not even mentioning how he had to sue Dame Dash for trying to hustle him out of album profits.
