Bold move starting off the album with a near 9 minute song a near 6 minute song and a 6 and a half minute song. But fair play to Lupe they're all pretty great, didn't feel long and I never felt the urge to skip. This is Lupe at his best really, when he has good beats, and well crafted songs.

lupe back like jordan in 96 :mjcry:

he had the bars the past 8 years..but where he lacked was MUSICALLY

and his music didn't have any heart..he sounded like he was going through the motions but wasn't into it. just to fulfill contract obligations..

idk what woke him up, but he's back now :blessed: :lawd:

Atlantic probably telling him, "your contract's up, we're not going to promote you anyway and we're basically being forced to release this because we don't want to get Sony'd by anyone. Just do whatever the hell you want."

I really do think that this is Lupe's best sounding album by a wide margin, by the way. I keep harping on this, but this sounds really clean and spacey in ways that rap albums rarely achieve. I almost want to shake the hands of the engineers. They play into how good this album is as much as Lupe's renewed motivation and songwriting skills do.

Is this being overhyped like F&L 2?? Please brehs don't mess with my feelings, I can't take another disappointment. How does this stack up to his other albums so far?

FL2 had halfway decent production, and about 4 turds right in the middle. Definition of an average album from someone with Lupe's talent.

This album blows it out the water

I don't know how to rate this until I get all the lyrics down. But this is dope musically and he's flowing his ass off. I'd love to have a look at the lyrics.

It's like Lupe is starting to understand how to use production to compliment his lyrics. He's flowing with the beats more organically than he's been for some time.

-F&L had okay production. Lots of samples, but the programming wasnt very sophisticated and it didnt age as well as it could have....
-The Cool was a crazy concept but this is where he started using that dreary, bland production that would haunt him on his next releases

Everyone rags on Lu, Nas, Eminem and Canibus types for always having weak, stale-ish beats...but truth is, those type of dudes cant pick the same beats as a Currensy or Dom Kennedy where the beat dictates where they take the track....they need a track that doesnt have too much going on that takes the attention away from the lyrics, which is the focal point

Its either some lo-fi "no drums" shyt like DOOM or Roc Marciano, or some stale loop with no layers or change-ups like the dudes mentioned above

Nas came close with Life Is Good. I gave up on Em and Canibus at this point, theyre too caught up in their bars to let go and just ride the beat. Lupe nailed it on here, and proves you can be hyper-lyrical and still have a track that knocks. Also, the production EVOLVES as the track goes on, and he switches the flow and subject matter to COMPLIMENT it. Even the little interludes (even the banjo LOL) shows that he was trying to infuse some actual musicality into this album. It sounds simple, but Ive been waiting for one of those dudes to really bring the production that matches what they doing lyrically

Its crazy when you think about it.... how hard it is for the MCs that we consider to have the most lyrical talent to have a track that BANGS??

After a full complete couple of listens, this album is okay, but not as huge of a monster that some make it out to be. It does have some certified amazing joints, but it has some overwhelmingly tedious songs too. Too much of OVERDOING IT lyrically as well as musically. Some of the music overproduced and could of been very much improved if it took a back seat to simplify it in order to AMPLIFY the lyricism more, OR at least if some of the songs, lyrically, ain't like trying to solve a Rubik's puzzle and Lupe just coast through the beat with straight forward lyricism those songs could be amplify better as well.

To compare to someone like Kendrick Lamar, you CAN be lyrically complex, musically expansive, AND stay grounded to be relatable to the listener. It felt at times, Lupe was trying to FORCE all of it together instead of allowing it to be more fluid. He wants to show you he's the so-called smartest MC in the room. He wants to show you he's the most musically imaginative there. He wants to do TOO much that it takes away the actual soul and heart into it. It's hard for me to sit back and vibe when I am trying so much work trying to decipher all the coded language he's saying. A song like Adoration of Magi WORKS where it was musically organic, lyrically smart, and not overdone. There's several songs that are like that and Mural was a perfect start, but overall the complete album felt disjointed to me. Still a decent album, so this isn't a trashing of the album, but my honest critique.
