i just realized that lupe rarely gets introspective in his music. You can’t be one of the greats and people not even know who you are outside of where you’re from.
Says who? Maybe if you replace “greats” with “most beloved”.. And I know plenty about Lupe…his pops, his upbringing, what he was into, etc… he’s shared all that in excess actually.

We undervalue skill/talent wayyy too much. Johann Sebastian isn’t considered arguably the greatest musician ever because we empathize with his upbringing, lol…he’s considered the best because of his musical genius. Be actually great at the art form you’re practicing…that’s the metric for greatness as an artist, imo, 🤷🏽‍♂️…I don’t necessarily need to know your pops was in ‘Nam and all that, respectfully…and I especially don’t need to know about it if you’re conveying it over a wack ass beat with basic throwaway rhymes lol. No matter what you’re sharing (or not)…make it dope

Why is Lupe dissing Kendrick now when he was one of the ones gassing him up when GKMC came out. And during that time Kendrick brought him out on stage in the Chi.

When did he switch up and start dissing Kendrick and why?
He never went out of his way to diss Kendrick. You had Kendrick stans saying he was maxed out in every attribute of rap, Lupe disagreed with that(as most would), and the stans acted like stans and started telling him how much better Kendrick was than him, and Lupe being Lupe, gave technical answers that people didn't like hearing, it spiralled from there.

He apologized for even bringing the nikkas name up once he saw that reaction, then that got spun into "Lupe apologizes to Kendrick" which is clearly gonna agitate someone

It's really just the fanbases being toxic, Kendrick doesn't really interact with his fans online to clear anything up, and in the nature of rap competition neither of them would wanna look soft apologizing for nothing in the first place:yeshrug: it's really a cringe situation all around

:what: then how did y'all know he was a samurai/skateboarding/anime watching/science leaning/street adjacent nikka then?

Damn near ALL of his bar heavy songs(SLR/Failure/Mural) are just him rhyming about the shyt he's into and around breh. He got plenty of regular tracks speaking on his life and views on things as well, it kinda comes with being in the "conscious rapper" bag

The entire “Cool” mythology is about Lupe. That shyt is groundwork for a movie in and of itself.

That being said

Lupe >>>>>>> Kendrick

But yes he is more palatable and yes he gets gaslit into hating on him but he’s also giving accurate assessments of his skillset.

You don’t need to have “bars” and one liners or a million and one devices working to be a dope MC or even lyricist but there’s levels to the shyt.

Kendrick >>>> Lupe.

Lupe just fades further into obscurity while remaking Poet Laureate for an audience that won't even acknowledge Canibus or the parallels of their careers.

Kinda wild tbh.

If I was dot, I'd just hit breh with 99% of your fans don't exist and leave it at that.

Most of The Cool is about himself, of course in traditional Lupe Metaphor form.

Michael (MY Cool) Young History was an allegory for himself, "The Streets" were his infatuations and "The Game" was the problems he faced.

Hi Definition was about wire taps he almost got hit with. Fighters was about his dead friend.

Might be worth it to give it a relisten...
Mane these nikkas know this. They just don’t like Lupe lol

As a matter of fact gkmc/F&L & TPAB/The Cool have so many conceptual and thematic parallels it’s kinda funny

Funny how on tpab K Dot expanded on the themes of the prayers said on find and started personifying these different entities he faces like Uncle Sam, Lucy

But Lupe is corny for personifying the streets, the Game, etc…

Stan wars are disingenuous & lame.

Neither Lupe Fiascn or Kendrick Lamar are the first rappers to use personification.

Like both Pharoahe Monch and Nas did that very thing and I'm certain there are other
examples that I can't recall right now.

It's not "corny", it's just not even remotely unique to either one of those rappers.

I think the problem is imaginative, metaphor laden raps are being attributed to Lupe Fiasco
and it's just ahistorical and inaccurate because dudes like Lupe Fiasco a lot.

Being more lyrical/faster rapper =/= Being a better rapper.

Nas: poetic style, very lyrical
Jay: braggadocios, witty, double entendres
Banks: punchline heavy, now more poetic
Kiss: punchlines, likes rhyming two words every bar
Big: flow, breath control, vivid storytelling
Mase: very melodic, dope voice, flow

All these nikkas rap differently.

Drake has alot of Mase/Fab/Jay in him. Kendrick is Nas with some Busta Rhymes and some Cube/Pac.

Both of them can rap. Just because you rap faster/lyrical don't mean you're better. For example, Hov got Kendrick on Dont Kill My Vibe and Drake got him on Poetic Justice and Jay Rock got him on Money Trees. Once you get past a certain threshold of lyricism, you can do other things to make your verse stand out. Personally, if Drake really really wanted to, he can hang with Kendrick :yeshrug:

With that said, Lupe is obviously bitter. He had potential to be talked about like Kendrick is but, he never delivered.
