It's American but it's designed to help Americans reconnect with Africa. Like I said watch the video and learn something bro.

I myself am skeptical about the holiday but at least get educated and hear what it is about.

Brehs have already said that without resorting to the tired "Are you white" colispeak. Majority of Africans (who are Black) have probably never heard of Kwanzaa :yeshrug:

Lupe rambling for 4 min after saying he's gonna be "concise" lol

Ok watched the video, don't feel I learned anything new tbh, but cool if Americans want to follow this :yeshrug:as long as it's not miscronstrued as something African, as Lupe says himself...if it gets Black Americans to study and inform themselves about Africa (and not some idealized version), good...looks like a good basis to work from and get people introduced to something that can lead to more knowledge about actual Africa.

How does the "connecting" thing actually happen though? Is it like, I don't know, history, songs, etc? Are there like actions taking place? I read this (The Official Kwanzaa Web Site - The Founder's Message 2000) but don't really see the "practical" things Lupe was talking about.

I always thought the principle of Kwanzaa sounded pretty funny. I only heard of it from a Rugrats episode. No African back home has ever heard of it.

Personally I don't see it being necessary these days with DNA ancestry tests being available and African culture becoming more global the past few years. Kwanzaa just doesn't seem necessary as it used to be 20 years ago :manny:

I understand the point of Kwanzaa or at least the goal it was trying to achieve at least 20 years ago. But, now in 2018, we've gained so much knowledge about African-American history, African history, Caribbean history, and the connection between the Continent and the Diaspora. Even today, anyone of African descent can grab a DNA kit and find out exactly where they are from. And learn about their country (or countries) of origin. Plus, we got extraordinary access to Continentals abroad, Continentals at home and the Internet.

So at this point, is Kwanzaa obsolete or simply needs a reboot/update?

I lived in Central African Republic 8 years and been around Africans almost all my life, never heard of it. Again, it's an American holiday, and since I left the US when I was 8...

Of course you haven't you're actually African...Kwanzaa is made up by a professor with a questionable past.

Honestly, most Black Americans don't celebrate Kwanzaa.

The mainstream has tried to make it a thing though.

More power to anyone who does though.

Kwanzaa is fugazi. Juneteenth is the real deal. Texas brehs, please elaborate on it's celebration. I have ideas on how I plan to celebrate, but I want to see how it's done down there.

By the beard of Frederick Douglas, the fukk is a Juneteenth?

Juneteenth
, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans throughout the former Confederacy of the southern United States. Celebrated on June 19, the word is a portmanteau of "June" and "nineteenth".[1][2] Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states.[3]

"Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States."

We have a long way to go as a people when it comes to knowledge of self and understanding that we constitute a nation

Website is dead, but I co sign your sentiment about how little we know about us. But I really want to make it pop. Get it going on social media, teach our kids about it, really dig into the tradition of it- and if there isn't much there, make some new traditions. If anything deserves a celebration, it's the end of slavery.

Edit: Even though you negged my ass.:mjlol:
