I've always dismissed kwanzaa as a fake holiday. But I also dismiss Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. So I guess I'll give video a shot. Lupe has the cred to give it a listen.

Yeah listen to it, he doesn't shove the holiday down people's throat so to speak but just speaks on his perspective of it. Also all holidays are man made to be honest lol.

True. But those holidays in particular have been co-opted and twisted into something that has nothing to do with the original reason for the holiday in the first place. Thanksgiving shouldn't even be a holiday. Since it's the day cacs are celebrating the successful trojan horse into the first step of genocide. But I disgress.

Haven't watched yet, but I celebrate Kwanzaa every year.

It is a cultural derivative of traditional African harvest festivals and celebrations.

You know which ones? I can't watch the vid right now. I'm asking because I never heard of Kwanzaa neither in Africa neither among Africans I know :yeshrug:but more power to you if it's something you follow and if it helps connect with some aspects of some african cultures.

From The Official Kwanzaa Web Site - The Founder's Message 2000:

The first-fruits celebrations are recorded in African history as far back as ancient Egypt and Nubia and appear in ancient and modern times in other classical African civilizations such as Ashantiland and Yorubaland. These celebrations are also found in ancient and modern times among societies as large as empires (the Zulu or kingdoms (Swaziland) or smaller societies and groups like the Matabele, Thonga and Lovedu, all of southeastern Africa. Kwanzaa builds on the five fundamental activities of Continental African "first fruit" celebrations: ingathering; reverence; commemoration; recommitment; and celebration.

It would be best if any of the West/Central African brehs (or brehettes) on here who live in the U.S. and have knowledge about their traditional harvest festivals and also Kwanzaa could speak to any similarities/overlap/etc

How is it "reconnecting" with Africa since it was invented in the US, by Americans? :jbhmm:

I never even heard of Kwanzaa before The Coli
Never heard of Kwanza? You live under a rock or are white?:hhh:

Also how it's reconnecting is a good question man, if you watch the video Lupe actually goes in depth into how it's reconnecting.

I lived in Central African Republic 8 years and been around Africans almost all my life, never heard of it. Again, it's an American holiday, and since I left the US when I was 8...

It's American but it's designed to help Americans reconnect with Africa. Like I said watch the video and learn something bro.

I myself am skeptical about the holiday but at least get educated and hear what it is about.
