Royce a damn nincompoop. What was he thinking?
He went about this all wrong. His first mistake was picking a battle with a guy who outclassed him lyrically. Royce is nasty don’t get me wrong, but if we were grouping rappers into lyrical tiers, I feel Lupe was always a tier above Royce.
Which leads to his 2nd mistake, which was to try and make it a contest of lyrical prowess. If he was gonna go at him, he should have went about it in a more direct, disrespectful, funny, creative or whatever have you way. He just tried to outrap him, which was dumb cause Lupe is the superior emcee.
None of his disses landed at all. “Shoot your son by the sun chips”…wtf? Why call Lupe a nerd? Lupe’s whole steez is being a nerd. You’re playing to his strengths. The problem with the nerd attack coming from someone like Royce is that Royce himself operates in a nerdy lane. His fan base has always had backpackers and traditional hip-hopper types, and he still never had as much mainstream success as Lupe.
The beat on Royce song was fire. The lyrics were good too, they were peak Royce. And peak Royce still couldn’t beat some shyt Lupe threw together in the studio real quick. He just wasted a good song and took that L. This was a complete unforced error by Royce.
