Lupe Fiasco: "Metaphors and punchlines matter....don't need to be a great lyricist to tell a story....shouldn't rely on delivery and flow"

I get what he is saying. It kind of dismisses great, legendary artist who arent great with punchlines or witty with wordplay.

He saved his point when he said turning that shyt off when telling a great story. (Slick rick)

But you rely only on flow and melodies and effects, and cant accompany any lyrical tool, then you are basic artist. Dont mean it dont sound good or bang in the whip.

Which also leads to what are you asking for on a song or from an artist.

Big Lupe fan. Possibly stan. The Cool stayed in rotación, love his evolution into Tetsuo/Zion form SLR Lu.

This is dry hating on Kendrick and his moment in the sun with these replies, who is probably the number 1 story teller atm in the game. How is storytelling not the apex of lyrics when we got rappers like Nas, Pac, Face, Cube all in our top 10s and none of those dudes really do too much metaphors/simile/entendres. All rappers that Lupe is a student of.

I understand wordplay crowd but by that metric then wack ass post drugs Eminem is the undisputed GOAT. Subject matter and story telling >>>

Matter fact, using Eminem as an example, whats a better song, Stan or Rap God? '97 Bonnie and Clyde or Godzilla?

FOH Lupe some of your GOAT songs are stories (Streets on Fire for example)

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Definitely dry hating on Kendrick.

Lupe at his best, is when he’s telling stories within stories and using dynamic flow/delivery. He is not heralded as a great bc of his punchlines and wordplay

He suffers the same rappity rap shyt that Eminem does. They can rhyme every word in the dictionary and bend words but sonically their music is ass, if you put Lupe on "Like That" he would have ruined the song rapping from the perspective of an octopus or something

Man shut the fukk up lol yall just pulling stuff out of your ass now

Eminem hasn’t made anything close to these in 20 years

And what’s crazy in every Lupe album he’s released recently there’s more storytelling with layers than him flexing his skill

I can def understand Lupe not being everyone's cup of tea, especially modern day Lupe. But having little imagination? Nah that part I can't agree with. You don't make songs like Mural and Ms. Mural if you lack creativity.
Lupe's mind works in a very mathematical way. He can figure out ways to conduct rhyme schemes that most other rappers can't. Which is still very impressive and requires a lot of skill. But I wouldn't call it very imaginative. Which is why he doesn't have any songs that have had major impact in hip hop. You gotta be engaging. And Lupe is not.

Kendrick could write obscure ass raps that nobody understands but himself. But Kendrick is trying to influence. He's trying to actually reach the listeners. And you can't do that if you're leaving them confused. Kendrick found the perfect balance between the creative and technical side of lyricism. He's got the lyrics. The wordplay. The hooks. The flows. The charisma. He's mastered it all. While also mastering the music.

Lupe mastered the lyrics but not much else. Which is why he was never able to break through like Kendrick. Lupe is an elite boxer. Kendrick is an elite martial artist. Bar for bar. Lupe can prolly beat anybody. But song for song. Kendrick is the king. And that's what matters most when it comes to being an all time great. Period.

Lupe just doesn't have much depth as an artist beyond clever wordplay. Even his stories are forgettable because he's trying to be too detailed on shyt that doesn't matter. But his stans will pretend he's just too genius for everybody.

You’re way off here. Go listen to Drogos Wave and tell me again lupe doesn’t have depth. He’s probably the most advanced story teller ever

"Drogas Wave" is a concept album by Lupe Fiasco that tells the story of African slaves who were thrown off ships during the Transatlantic Slave Trade and transformed into water beings. These beings, known as "Longchains," embark on a journey through time and space, seeking redemption and freedom.

The album explores themes of identity, history, and resilience, using intricate storytelling and thought-provoking lyrics. It's a complex and immersive narrative that dives deep into the legacy of slavery and its enduring impact on society.
