Malcolm was extremely flawed in many aspects of even though he's one of my favorite historical people. But it's in my opinion that some of his words and actions were divisive. Dr. King on the other hand was a visionary.

Look, the Black experience in this country has no analogue, but even if you look at the modern Black conditon in its full scope, and draw lines between it and slavery, to think that this life is the same as the life of a Black person living on a plantation in the slavery era is disrespectful to that history. You're not a slave. The legacy of slavery is still a defining factor of Black life, but modern Black life is not the same as slave life.

They don't have to vote for Obama. Just vote. There are local and state issues that are very important as well.

This "why vote?" mentality is always pushed due to presidential elections, but it neglects localized issues.

The problem is the two party system IMO. It pigeonholes people into an "us vs. them" mentality that is destructive. People who criticize this criticism, always point to the primaries as examples where different opinions are heard, but what happens most of the time is that primaries seek to elect the candidate who has the best chance of winning the main election. This is destructive.

This country is just one step above a dictatorship. We have two parties who disagree on several things, but agree on several key, and dangerous positions: Military Industrial Complex, Wall Street Welfare, Serving Business interests, and empowering the government to violate people's rights.

So, I can understand the criticism some have in not supporting these parties or politicians. But there are others to support. There are local issues where there are no party affiliations.

Voting and using the legal system is the only power we have left. The problem is we are already self-defeated in many ways. Lupe is an example of that. He has already given up.

If you go back and study what made the civil rights successful, it was a four-tier front:

1) Using the legal system to expose unconstitutional laws and practices
2) Establishing a black voting bloc that had power, and thus, influence politicians to fight for their cause
3) Social protest and business boycotts
4) Media showing the country the extent of the abuse going on

They used the system to slap the system into place.
