Hawks felt that #3 was too high to draft Young, and they couldn't trade any lower than #5 to take Young because Orlando probably would have taken him at 6

And for the Mavs, there was the risk that Memphis probably would have taken Doncic at #4

Trade made sense for both teams (even tho Hawks were still crazy to want Young over Doncic)
Next year's draft is meant to be weak so I'm not mad about losing that pick, especially if the Mavs are good

Because other teams were trying to trade up to the 3rd or 4th spot to draft Doncic. MAVS were able retain their Cap space for signing free agents. Instead of losing that Cap space by taking on Bazemore contract.

I'm not tripping over the pick too much. I realize next year's draft is weaker, but there are some decent wings coming out next year that would have been nice to add. I'm just weary of this team giving up any draft resources after what happened 2011-2016.
