Big Hutch said the album was done at the same time as nikkaz4Life.

Also, what's your source for Chronic being recorded in 1991?

Cold 187um:
Yeah, but where things got cloudy was when (Dr. Dre’s) The Chronic came out. (Above the Law’s) Black Mafia Life was done at the same time that (N.W.A.’s) nikkaz4Life was done. It’s just that Black Mafia Life dropped after The Chronic, so suddenly it looked like we were chasing that sound when in fact our album had been done long before The Chronic. Dr. Dre and I worked a lot together so when I created G-Funk, it was a lot different than what he was doing and he actually took the musical theory to Death Row (Records). What a lot of people don’t know is that we were supposed to be on Death Row because at that time we were all managed by Suge (Knight). So when Suge, Doc and all those cats were forming Death Row back in those early days, we were gonna be part of the artist roster. Then Snoop came up to us because we discovered Snoop through Warren G. When we decided to stay at Ruthless as Above the Law, Snoop and Warren G went to Death Row. That’s how it all splits up. Black Mafia Life was the birth of G-Funk — you can quote Tupac (Shakur) on that. Tupac asked us what was our style of music and I told him “We call it ‘G-Funk.'” But Black Mafia Life came out after The Chronic even though it was recorded long before that album because we were in a contract dispute with Sony and we were moving labels. When Above the Law left Sony and signed with Giant/Warner Brothers, The Chronic came out during that transition period. So that’s where the discrepancy in history comes from you and where you get that “tomayto, tomawto” type of shyt.

But if you research the records, you have to ask yourself, “How do you get from nikkaz4Life to The Chronic?” There had to something there in the middle and that was us. We were always funky and I stayed funky all throughout that whole ’90s period. Dr. Dre never did that sound again—no disrespect to him. I never had a problem with them doing G-Funk. I just had a problem with them not acknowledging the origin of where it came from.

Alwayz into Sumthin was the first G Funk track to my knowledge..I might be wrong though.

That's spot on 'cause except for Boyz (Which was really Schoolly's PSK revisited) Dre usually did uptempo-mid range type grooves before that like Gangsta..Express..100 Miles & Runnin..fukk Tha Police..

Didn't this guy head Death Row for awhile when they were deliberately trying to destroy the value of the company?

when you really think about it, it's ridiculous how much dre and them bit off them nikkas; from the g funk to the aftermath name jack. these nikkas really are the pioneers of west coast hip hop that dre has gotten a lot of credit for :mjcry:

if cold hadn't bought the g funk to hip hop, dre would've been lost without another sound to perfect and use

when i look back now, cold really is like everythin' dre is hyped up to be

and before anyone says, but where's above the law's the chronic album? or where's their doggystyle? to that i say, black mafia life album = the chronic and doggystyle = uncle sam's curse :francis:

as i got older, i didn't/don't understand how he got priased as the GOAT for them long ass loops he was passing a samples :francis:

Cause nobody else was doin that kinda shyt at the time and it made everybody from West to the South finally see that u didn't have to piggyback off in sound or rhymes NYC just to get heard by a major...Dre has his flaws but he was the "go to" cat in SoCal for a long ass time

This is the question though, which album y'all think is better? Which one y'all done fukked with more throughout the years?

Chronic or Black Mafia Life? Real talk....

Tell the truth....I was bumpin both them shyts when they dropped. Me personally, I liked BML more, the shyt was just darker, more sinister, back then I was really big on that sound.

To this day I play BML more than the Chronic. Chronic was bangin tho, everybody and they mama had that tape.

Them Lo Lifes...
Dre was using funk.

Just a differant style of production...like the bomb squad or e. Sermon.

I fux with Hutch..but ue will never have Dres ear..

Which sets their sound apart.

Chronic was recorded in 91' after N4L and dropped at the end of 92'
BML didn't drop till 93' but they're pretty much twins the way Dre bit Hutch's sound so hard...The casual fans don't really care to get it and of course Dre and his circle won't ever *ahem* recognize even after all these years smh

The orgins go from 91'-93' between ATL's Vocally Pimpin+nikkaz4Life+Deep Cover...Everybody knows Hutch and them was doin they thing on the music tip behind the scenes, but of course Dre was known to jack credits for songs he didn't write & beats he didn't do himself...No surprise that Hutch finally called him out the shyt in The Source in '93 and
