The rule changes made this happen. Can’t touch anybody on cuts anymore. Moving screens are basically legal now as long as you don’t stick your leg or your hips out. Any contact on a drive, even if the defender is vertical is usually called as a foul. It’s a shyt show. And yet the mid-range is still very important if used properly, ask Kevin Durant.

Did they make team by team diagrams also? That would make things really interesting.

At least shot selection is more even now. So many shots used to be taken on the right side.
It’s a graph from his new book that comes out at the end of April.

Ill be preordering the hard copy for sure. It’s apparently going to have tons of illustration and graphs.

I understand the 3 has more value but imagine if Houston had taken 10 less 3s during that stretched they missed 27 in a row?
Who’s to say they’d have made these hypothetical 2’s though? A lot of the 3’s they missed were open shots too. Considering the rate they made their 3’s at during the season, Houston missing that many in a row was legit around one in a million type odds. Can’t be passing up open looks that you normally make.

Why shoot an open long 2 now when you know you can get a open 3 two seconds later? Even children understand delayed gratification.

that sure helped the Rockets in Game 7

instead of simply driving in for layups or hitting easy midrange jumpers, they stayed bricking 27 straight 3s

then the Celtics did the same game in their Game 7 vs Cavs

It’s frightening how fast the shift has happened too. Feels like yesterday that the Celtics, after losing the finals because the got killed on the glass in game 7, spent their draft picks on a pair of guys who’s only assets as nba players was “they’re tall”. Those guys weren’t even on the team a year later and neither was Perkins :heh:. Remember when Joel Anthony was a starting center for the team expected to win it all? Imagine him getting minutes on a contender today. Those old pistons games where first to 80-85 was usually the winner if the score even got that high.
I was watchin game 1 of '96 Bulls/Sonics on youtube a week or two ago and one thing that stuck out to me 5 minutes in was that Seattle had several fast break opportunities early, like 3on1/ 3 on 2 stuff but these guys stopped at the freethrowline extended to shoot (and brick) 15 footers.

It looked so weird seein that shyt :russ:even tho that was how we were running our own 3 on 1 and 2 on 1 drills back in high school (early 00s) and pretty much how i grew up watching/playin bball

That's my thing....how do the analytics quantify mental pressure? Because a lot of great three point shooters aren't as great when the pressure is on during the playoffs....does it make more sense to take a bunch of 12-15 footers as opposed to a bunch of 24 footers when it's an elimination game in the playoffs?

It all ends up the same.

Games where each team is slinging up a combined 50-60 3s a night

“It all ends the same. A game where each team is slinging up 50-60 2s a night.”

Nah because how the teams play and their offensive identity matter. Bucks play inside out with Giannis’s Shaq-lite paint presence as their anchor. Warriors are far more motion and misdirection oriented.

If Adam Silver is upset about the product :demonic: I have a suggestion

Award 1 point for scary ass 3 pointers, 2 points in the mid-range and 3 points for all shots in the restricted area (includes dunks that start outside the area).....remove the flagrant 2 and watch the big men and athletic wings take the league back over.

I'm probably one of the few 80s babies that likes the current league though :pachaha:

They still would have lost because they weren’t even close to the warriors in terms of talent.

Those missed 3 ‘s would have just been bricked long 2’s

Funny thing is the analytics is what had them go toe to toe with a much superior team.
