When you strip away all the fat and fluff and get right down to the meat and bones, this is basically the old guard and it's followers clawing and fighting against change.

These guys basically feel as if they're prestige and position is being attacked and gradually taken from them and given over to others, be it through political policies or in this case propaganda in the media.

At least that's what I think.
