I'm just so removed from that reality its hard to imagine.

The USA is basically self sufficient for most things, including natural resources. Its massive, surrounded by water and relatively friendly neighbors.

Imagine being a smaller country with DOZENS of countries around you that each war to kill each other

The answer isn't so complicated for them...

The Russians sort of hold the diplomatic glue right now. Kind of wild. They have working to good relationships all over the region.

It won't be mainly Turkish troops but proxies.

This is the perspective never discussed on CNN or Fox News. If you were watching these alt/indy media sites back in 2013 you would know this is one major....not the only.....but a major reason for Syrian conflict, is competing natural gas pipelines.
