Banning an institution that has deep roots in society is not always the wisest move (the US ban on alcohol is a good example). Sometimes, it's more practical to phase it out

This argument is not designed to appease Western sensitivities. It's the dominant legal position amongst Muslim jurists and is even used to refute certain Muslim cults who want to reintroduce slavery.
