Reddit threads on this LBall topic are filling with stories about how racist the Chinese are against darker ppl. There are also many tales of how Chinese folks will allege theft against innocent western tourists (regardless of race) as a way to get bribe money.
ex: when tourists are checking out of hotel
ex: when tourists are lining up at the cashier to pay for items while shopping
My Russian friends have told similar stories about their visits "home" to Russia. Tip well and use cash money, else you will be hassled about alleged thefts and/or your credit card numbers will be stolen before your return flight to the USA even touches down. This is a risk faced by ignorant western tourists AND by native Russians visiting a new town.
I doubt LBall stole anything. What does he need with a new gd PURSE? The shopkeepers know that he is young, naive, rich, tall, black and "not from here." The college should chaperone the players more closely and warn them not to enter shops UNLESS THEY WILL BUY SOMETHING. Slick Chinese palms will get greased, and the alleged thieves will avoid jailtime for these BS charges.
