It was going to be difficult for Zuma to be dislodged at the behest of the opposition. The numbers suggest that he is losing some support from within, any other parliamentary democracy he might have walked but liberation era parties resent losing in that way. He has undoubtedly damaged the ANC and to think of how he came in on a wave of support from people who are now his sworn enemies.

Well, his escalation to the presidency was just an attempt for Thabo Mbeki to get closer to certain cadres in the ANC, no? Didn't Thabo put him as Deputy President?

Mbeki put him in because they fought together in the late 80s to 90s against Cyril Ramaphosa who was thought to be Mandela's favored successor then when he was a trade unionist. Mbeki was in exile, a protege of Tambo, and the ANC briefly had tensions among the exiles and the people who remained in the country and faced the regime hands on, it's not that different to tensions in other liberation movements between the political leadership and the military aspect. The ANC has different dynamics because of its affiliates like COSATU and SACP. I don't think Zuma was seen as President-in -waiting , Mbeki seemed to be more concerned with Ramaphosa and Sexwale in the early 2000s (they were accused publicly of conspiring to remove him). Zuma had not been seen as someone with that power base until his firing by Mbeki due to the corruption stuff which ignited a firestorm in the movement.

The main complaint about him towards the end was his centralization of power. He dissed the left , abandoned RDP, and concentrated policy-making. Hell his AIDS thing was also adopted by the party even though it is obvious that some of them did not agree with it. To his credit he fired Zuma as a result of the Shabir Shaik stuff, the top leadership knew that Zuma was potentially compromised because of his finances but he benefited from not being Mbeki IMO. I would say the bigger irony is in former ANC youth league and COSATU complaining about Zuma, you should see some of the stuff they were saying about Mbeki them in favor of Zuma. All those dudes have now gone to form the EFF or are on the outside looking in like Vavi. They all thought they would have a bigger say in the Zuma administration but no one saw the Guptas coming.
