I mean sure, it can generate a lot of revenue but can one compare the amount of employment a thriving film industry protected by copyright laws compared to a viable small-to-medium size manufacturing industry?

Nigeria has the potential to create one. In cities like Aba in the South-East, there's a lot of potential. Nigeria has a car manufacturing company named Innoson which should be exported throughout West and Central Africa, but, I think the state will subsidize it and not orient the company towards export - thus killing it. Like Peugot Nigeria cars.

What I mean is that AAs who already know a lot about the film industry and have a large presence in Hollywood(largest film industry) can help develop Nollywood. And Nollywood would be a good alternative for AAs. AA actors, producers, directors, etc can use their resources to make QUALITY Nollywood films which are lacking badly.

@EastCoastNaga asked what AAs can do and so I answered film industry.

What are the odds of the North seceding from the country? And would Nigeria be better off without them?

The North would never secede. If they were to do so, they'd be like a bigger version of Niger. Most of the poorest in Nigeria live in the North. This is why the Nigerian government has such a paltry wealth allocation system for states that produce oil. They only get 13 per cent of the share of oil revenues!

If the North left, the South would be considerably richer but it would have immediate difficulty in regard to agricultural self-sufficiency (which is already quite bad). Then again, they could just import foodstuffs from the North...

That's fair. Though my earlier critiques about the drawbacks of focusing solely on the entertainment industry still stand. I will assume that you probably meant that investing in Nollywood would not be the main focus of African-American entrepreneurs.

It would be nice to see more diasporan blacks involved in Nollywood- it'd probably help to break down a lot of the cultural barriers between Africans in Africa and Africans in the diaspora.

@EastCoastNaga

I'm sure a lot of the usual stuff will be suggested here, such as the need for tourism, engineers etc. However, I think that a lot of African Americans (and other black people) would do well to look into Nigeria's fitness sector. More and more Nigerians these days are becoming conscious of their health and are looking for ways to eat healthily and maintain/obtain a good figure. It's the perfect time for people to start opening gyms or to start their own nutrition companies over there.

Would you say the North needs the South more than the South needs the North

Nollywood would be so much better if it wasn't full of promoting Nigerian Stereotypes and wanting to imitate Tyler Perry type films. Black people enjoy Dramas but Nollywood movies tend to be extremely poorly written.

That aside INFRASTRUCTURE creation needs to be the number one focus for West Africa. Nigeria should be leading the way but corrupt leadership as always prevents this. From what I hear from all the oil Nigeria hasn't diversified their economy what so ever and of course most of the wealth is kept at the top. It seems Nigerias elites are too busy trying to impress American and UK elites and end up sh*tting on their countries in the process.

I think eventually all of the countries put together by the European colonial masters are going to split apart. Essentially the Igbo and the Hausa have already had one war; so this Boko Haram thing might be a prelude to something else coming.

I think that it is going to happen all over Africa, because some of the stuff that I have read indicates that ethnic groups like the Bakongo still identy very strongly with their destroyed Kingdom, which at some point has to impact Angola, Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo.

If Nigeria split apart, it would make the deaths from India's partition seem miniscule. There are over 10 million Igbos living all over Nigeria. Their exodus would be 10 times the exodus of 1966.

No doubt.. I don't think all of the countries will break apart. But it will be damn well near it. This will happen when the usa finally buys the farm. You will get a globally gasp... and then people will start to realize what that means. No more global unipower to police shyt...the rest of the world then proceeds to explode....

the amount of ethnic cleansing that's gonna take place globally:whew:

Some tribes in Africa that exist today.. ain't gonna exist when this is all over :manny:

The darkest possible timeline for Africa. My hope is for there to be gradual devolution to ethnic groups and regions within African states to ease anxieties but it seems unlikely to happen because governments believe that centralization is the key to maintaining national unity/territorial integrity. Nigeria is no different. Nigeria is a federal state with a strong centre. Its accomplished this structurally by controlling oil resources within the country and having the sole rights of redistribution while also dividing the country into 36 states (most of which are not economically viable).

Ive said it before and i will say it again Nigeria needs a dictator or someone with authoritative power, the corruption levels make basic governance impossible.
