Everybody knows it's fake, you're not gonna get cheered just cause your a good guy. If the bad guy is doing a great job with his promos and whatnot, he's gonna get cheered.

This whole idea of people only realising in the last decade that wrestling is fake is such bullshyt. Fans knew it was fake in the 1980s.

It's got nothing to do with that. You think they don't know it's fake in Japan?

You don't think people in cinemas rooting for The Avengers don't know it's make believe?

It's a cheap ass excuse.

Was the internet and shyt out in the 1980s? Were these podcasts rampant in the 80s?

How does anyone take Bayley serious as a heel? Just how? She's the softest person on the whole roster

Not anymore. She's considered a top woman in-ring and has always shown flashes of being able to push people around (YOU AIN'T SHYT SASHA, her fukking with Alexa Bliss about Nikki, shoving Charlotte, etc.).

Anyway, this is why Baron Corbin is the best heel going today.

They cheer because they think it's a moment as d8hs said earlier and because they think it will make a character more exciting, now they can really let loose but IMO the heel turn is a crutch and has very little logic behind most of them. While I was watching I thought Roderick Strong heel turn was the worst, while everyone else cheered I'm looking around thinking why the fukk didn't he turn earlier? Why would he turn when he and Pete Dunne were about to win the belts? It was just done to pop the crowd and since then he's just another lackey. A lot of these guys turn and accomplish squat been heels for years and nothing. Is Zayne better off as a heel? How about Shinsuke? Both were better before.

:comeon: so wrestlers were telling store and giving interviews outside of kayfabe like that in the 80s? :comeon:Dirtsheets were just as accessible as they are now in the 80s?

The first thing 90% of people said to me when I was a kid in the 90s and told them I liked wrestling was "don't you know it's all fake"? I'm sure that was true in the 80s too, but that's besides the point.

Obviously since the rise of the internet and social media any kind of mystery or sense of kayfabe is completely dead, but the idea that the majority of fans didn't know what they were watching was fake is absurd. The product itself (WWF anyway) was so clearly fake. As obviously fake as a comic book movie. But we had magazines, there was the wrestling exposed doc in the 90s, you had McMahon exposing the business to athletic commissions saying it was fake, calling their shows exhibitions. I probably knew wrestling was fake before I knew Santa didn't exist.

I mean...The Rock in 98 and 99 was getting NUCLEAR heat. Despite being already the most charismatic talker in the business. But the fans still booed him because he had good babyfaces to playoff I(initially Shamrock, DX HHH then Austin and Foley).

I don't think it hurts the product, what hurts the product is what others have already said: characters are so stale and take sooo long to do something new, compelling or interesting that a heel turn is seen as a spark, so people cheer for it.

You have a guy like Daniel Bryan getting booed constantly and he was the poster boy of "smarks will never boo him". So it's not like it can't be done in 2019 :manny:
