Couldn’t Bret just drop it before Montreal? And then run a dq finish in Montreal and Shawn keeps the title? They just wanted to screw Bret on the way out 
In his book, he says that he’d drop it to Stone Cold at Survivor Series. However, like Hogan leg dropping Savage, Stone Cold not getting the belt from HBK (who had still white hot heat from Montreal) as well as Tyson not being a scumbag joining DX and fitting in perfectly WM 14, then wrestling history is completely altered.
WM 14 and that match was literally the night wrestling changed forever. That match started the whole finisher counter into finisher wave on a big level and other shyt we see still to this day. Plus it led Austin vs McMahon taking off the next day at Raw which led to shyt slowly turning around in the ratings resulting Nitro’s win streak getting snapped and led to Bischoff starting to panic (ironically, Nitro won the very next week

I believe they tried something like that where Bret would lose it in Detroit the night before Survivor Series but Bret refused saying some shyt like 'his Canadian fans are expecting him to be the champion and they'll be so disappointed if he lost it on a house show the night before blah blah blah...or some shyt like that. I think it was a Jim Cornette shoot interview where I heard that story.

Bret had creative control in his contract, meaning he could veto shyt he didn’t wanna do IE dropping the belt to Shawn in Montreal. Him not wanting to because he’s a Canadian hero might be to some, but they had just spent more than half a year running shows literally based off that notion with the Hart Foundation vs. USA feud in front of hot crowds in Canada. On top of that, dude had worked over the required dates in his contract, meaning he didn’t even have to work Survivor Series.
Vince locked him into a 10 year deal he couldn’t honor, brokered a deal for Bret to go to WCW to get out of it, and then for some reason put the belt on him if I remember the timeline right
The popular notion is Bret screwed Bret, which I can see, but I put that on Cokeboy’s shoulders. The fact that the Bret/Shawn feud ever escalated as far as it did was because he was as asleep at the wheel, put the belt on the guy, knowing he’s leaving, then allowed himself to be worked into a shoot by DX into thinking Bret was gonna jump with the title, even though allegedly there was an injunction on WCW to prevent that shyt from happening again. Giant clusterfukk that was totally avoidable but worked out for most parties involved in the end so

Hindsight 20/20, this interview was huge but damaging at the same time. The circus leader isnt supposed to pull thr curtain and tell the audience that the circus is rigged. No matter how smart they think they are.
I disagree, I think the ending takes what was a classic and makes it mythical
Vince did what he had to do and tell bret what he had to but Bret is on his way out and has a problem with who he is gonna lose the belt too?
Vince is right it's a long tradition in the business to loss on your way out.
It was bret being selfish...his boss wanted him to loss the title and bret got petty and didn't want to do it.
If I were vince I'd be mad as fukk too..HBK beating Bret in Montreal makes sense...
