It wasn't "bush men," it was the poachers who were hunting and butchering those chimps in large numbers. They come into close contact with blood and open wounds on a regular basis. All it takes is one slightly mutated strain (and this kind of virus obviously mutates very quickly and all the time, which is why it is so hard to defeat) that could infect humans to come into contact with either a wound or a mucous membrane on a human being. The virus also travelled the world before making it to San Francisco. There were reports of it elsewhere before it hit the US.
