nah breh....the 16-bit era was the GOAT gaming era.
You had original content, arcade ports, ACTUAL CHEAT CODES, Password Saving) which was much CHEAPER than memory cards, console exclusivity actually MEANT something. Among other things...we will never see that in gaming again...the business model overtook the artistry for the most part.
Gaming has always been about BUSINESS first and foremost, that's what caused the great gaming crash that allowed Nintendo to swoop and sh1t on western developers.
The thing that annoys me most about gamers is their obvious generational ignorance. They don't remember the final fantasy clones or the super mario clones, they can only recount Call of Duty clones because that's what's all the rage right now.
There was never real "artistry" the average game back then was just that a game, the ones that mattered most are the only ones we can recall.
And in 20 years it'll be the same thing looking back on this generation.
People will only talk about the absolutely best titles and ignore the terrible ones because that's what nostalgia does for us, it helps us to forget terrible

And the only reason we have memory cards is because you can't save to a disc which holds tons more data than carts do for far less.
On topic though :
This generation of gaming all in all has been fantastic if you ask me.
There absolute amount variety is completely and utterly STAGGERING.
People call the Wii terrible when it's had several GREAT first party titles, good third party titles and a massive downloadable library of old school classics on top of a regular store that stocks games seen on other consoles.
Xbox Live is fvcking great, anyone who disagrees doesn't know what it's like to sit in a party chat playing L4d Or Halo all weekend with a bunch of your friends setting up matches or going into match making and whipping on randoms.
That doesn't even take into account the Xbox originals, indie arcade (REAL INDY dev on PC, Then debug on your personal Xbox, made with a shoe string budget indy), Big Budget indie games, and of course downloadable full retail titles.
Ps3 has TONS of options.
You can download PS1,PS2 AND Ps3 titles, you can play free MMO's (Free realms and DCU), you can also select from LARGE selection of downloadable titles.
Also the DLC whining is just that WHINING.
There are plenty of stand alone titles this gen that do not have DLC.
With that said DLC can and has been a great addition to gaming.
On top being to download trailers, demo's and pull up information on specific titles from your console
without having to use a PC.

Games are getting SMALLER, not bigger. And then when the DLC comes out, half the people you play against? You can't play with them anymore because they playing the new maps. They even adding new shyt.. putting it on the disc you already bought.. but you gotta pay extra to play it

This gen just happened to be more of a refinement of the genres and game styles from last gen...how many games really broke the mold like gta3 shenmue orMario 64 did?
Gears of war maybe? It's just a well polished gen with shiner graphics and online gaming playing a bigger role. Mgs4 was epic but it was just a bigger prettier mgs2 really and I loved it anyway

We are all also getting older growing out of it and have experienced the evolution of gaming to where it's at it's pinnacle. If I was 12 today these would probably be some of the greatest gaming memories of my life the way mgs2 Mario 64 goldeneye no mercy soul caliber shenmue Mario kart etc...were
