To be fair, part of the issue is also that the country is so large and spread out, you got a lot of people that live 30 miles past the middle of nowhere. It's obviously easier to run fiber in countries that are smaller than some of our states.

But as far as why we don't have it in the big cities, I agree. I'm still kinda salty that we won't have FIOS in Michigan anytime soon.

My brother, we have cables spanning entire oceans. It's doable and should be a priority. A lot of it has to do with just greed.

Time Warner Cable executive claims consumers don’t want gigabit Internet

“We’re in the business of delivering what consumers want, and to stay a little ahead of what we think they will want,” the executive said while speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference on Wednesday, according to The Verge. “We just don’t see the need of delivering [Google Fiber speeds] to consumers.”

They're afraid of losing TV revenue too.

Uncertain grounds
Did you guys forget the earlier days of the innanets? I remember when 56k was an upgrade from typing a link, going outside and playing for 30 minutes then coming back in, checking the web page then typing another link and going outside again. Internet now doesn't need to get any faster than what cable/dsl have to offer, really.

No, it really does. Clouding Computing, Database, 4K, streaming, eventual external processing would benefit.

We're already moving to Thunderbolt/Pcie3.0 hardware speeds of 10 Gbps and 15 Gbps .

500 Mb to 1 Gbps is plenty fine and doable. Most universities, especially research areas get 300-500 Mb.

I grow up on that 28/56 as well, but the computing world is changing. We need innovation and allowing these speeds open up a ton of opportunity to innovate.

the slow change is largely due to the monopoly southwestern bell corp (at&t) had. at&t owns most of the lines and is holding back a lot of companies/technology.

monopolies just don't get broken up and go away. just like breaking up standard oil into exxon mobil, chevron etc hasn't done a thing to today.

at&t has a lot of influence in politics which looks out for it's interests first. so fiber optics nationwide is thrown in the bushes. until they find a way to monopolize fiber optics.

Bu bu bu buttttt the free market.

Tons of excuses in this thread. How come when Google offers free fiber optic to whole cities does then telecoms suddenly offer cheaper and faster Internet?

Of course rural areas don't need fiber optics, but even in a city like NYC, where companies like Time Warner have monopolies, the Internet would rank well below the global standard...

I get that you are happy with your mediocre speeds. But fact is many people would at least like the OPTION of getting high speed internet in their area without having to pay a mortgage for it.
:stopitslime: you made statement about not being able to watch youtube in peace. Now it's about small businesses.

DSL usually has lower speeds of up to like 5 Mb/s on a good day. So you don have DSL. Like the poster above me is saying you cant even get gifs to load properly much less look at youtube in peace with a DSL connection these days. Thats all I was saying. 12.22 Mb/s this late isnt great either tbh. I would find it very hard to be productive with that. Theres a reason college campuses have above average internet connections.

i can barely watch a gif :sadcam:

because of at&t and charter communication foolery. they say they cant provide service to my street. so they say i have to go with charter and get charged business rates...
:whoa: :whoa: don't fukk with charter, their products are garbage and overpriced. They have fees and on top of fees, watch out for that. They barely even had any channels, not that I watch tv. like that any more. The internet was straight though.

U Verse > Charter

But dawg how do you even watch pr0n with those speeds....

I thought At&t disbanded DSL, a long time ago.. I could have sworn that went out the along with the sbc yahoo deal....

I'm saying what can't most people do with 12mb/s. How many torrents are you downloading breh....

Colleges have above average connections because there are numerous people connecting to one line. If your argument is for multiples users, on a single home connection then that's a different conversion. but for my personal use(only me) I don't really need to have 500mbps.

or if you accidentally download or stream something you've just used federal property to commit a crime :(
Hmm, didn't even think about that.
How many of us accidentally downloaded a movie, song or video by accident... even though it required entering a captcha. :comeon:

Well, I wouldn't put the national network into the hands of the federal government. Only if there was a major abuse of the network traffic by all private companies, I think it would be better maintained by for-profit corporations.
