Why in Bob's name would he gamble with his freedom in such a reckless fashion? Surely he realized that text messages and other early statements from Kelsey claiming that Tory shot Meg being allowed into evidence might have some impact on the jurors.

The eye witness was the defense's witness and even claimed to say Kelsey had a "flash" coming from her first.
People keep gaslighting you when you show them the entire testimony.
Meg doesn't know who shot her. She just knows Tory was who she saw with the gun.
Kelsey has GSR, the same flashes on her the eye witness saw, AND motive.
That text message doesn't mean shyt. Tory could be apologizing for a bunch of shyt: fukking friends, cheating on meg and kelsey, trying to holler at Kylie, saying things to make the girls fight, etc etc.
Mind you, when Kelsey texts "Tory shot Meg" WE DONT KNOW IF TORY KNOWS IF MEG WAS ACTUALLY SHOT. Meg herself didn't know she had fragments until she went to the hospital.
Meg. Was. fukked. Up. She was THAT drunk. And they BOTH denied having the very fight that led to having a gun pulled.

If we follow the chain of events as you see them, Kelsey shoots first, Tory gains possession of the weapon and shoots, by this point in time Meg is shot and two people have fired a weapon.
Furthermore, there's no reason for Tory to apologize to Meg for sleeping with Kelsey when he was literally fukking Kelsey first and Meg is the one that told her to pursue him. Meg is the one that fukked Tory behind Kelsey's back, not the other way around.

She doesn't remember because she was fukked up. She didn't even recount going back to Kylie's house to get her slippers. This never even comes up. Kelsey is the one who even had to fill this in. The eye witness even fills in the fact Kylie and Kelsey were fighting.

Prior to the night in question Tory was fukking both Kelsey and Meg, the only person that wasn't aware of this arrangement was Kelsey. Again, Meg was fukking Tory behind Kelsey's back, not the other way around. The fact that he's fukking them both is something he should be apologizing to Kelsey about, there's literally no reason to apologize to Meg about it.
Look, Tory didn't want to say: "look Kelsey started shooting at meg and I took the gun and fired the gun" without looking like he COULD have shot Meg.
Also, he was hoping it would die down.
Except one thing: The industry pushed for someone to be held accountable for their mega star being possibly assaulted.
