Draft Targets:

Trade-up Candidates (or lucky drops): Stein, Porzingis, Stanley Johnson, Myles Turner

Links are to their DX profiles. We all know about Stein. Potential Chandler type defensive presence with a mean streak. Perhaps a slightly higher offensive upside. Can cover a bunch of ground and make up for our other weak post defenders and rebounders. Porzingis also seems to be a plus shot-blocker. Toughness remains to be proven but he doesnt really seem soft to me from what Ive seen. Much higher offensive potential than Stein as he has shown a nice fade-away and 3 pt potential. He is a bit thin and may not be able to play the 5 unless he puts on 20lbs. He's projected by DX to go at 8..I could see his stock rise or fall after official measurables come out (listed as 7'0 220).

Stan is a 3 that probably lost stock after the NCAA tourney. He had a bad showing there and played with low Bball IQ. We all know Danny likes to try and snipe guys when their value drops though. I see him as a potential all-star..6'8 245 with 7'0 wing span..will be able to defend and finish day 1 but his jumper needs fixing. I think if he somehow slides to 12, Stein/Porzingis aren't there and we haven't moved our picks yet theres a chance we could move up a couple spots from 16 to nab him.

Myles Turner is another option. Hes projected at 11. He is still growing (based on the last 5 listings). 6'10 w/o shoes right now. With shoes he was at 6'11.5. 7'4" wingspan and weighs in around 245. Decent scoring potential and excellent rebounder and shot blocker (top 5 in nation by some metrics in both against all competition). He is a bit slow and only scored 5 times in transition but he is only 19 years old. He's always been highly touted but is seemingly slipping through the cracks a little this year. Wouldn't mind scooping him at all although Id like to see a bit more grit out of him. Not sure if Danny would draft him based on our philosophy though. Not only is he slow..but his "type" could arguably be had later (see Upshaw) and if we stay at 16 he might go BPA.

Already in range: Portis, Lyles, Looney

Each could arguably be as potentially good as other bigs in the draft sans Okafor and Towns. Additionally, Portis and Lyles are big enough to play the 4 or 5 in our fluid system. Lyles may have been stifled by the presence of Towns and Stein..Looney could have the highest upside of the 3..he was at 6'9 220 so he'd be more of a 4..but he averages 9 boards a game and scored a lot for UCLA. Best shooter of the 3 and will be more efficient in the pros..forced into volume scoring in college. Lyles is right there with him in potential though..showed a lot of all-around skills including ball-handling and an array of ways to score. I really like Portis too. Probably a bit tougher and more aggressive than the rest but sacrifices that by having a bit less athleticism. Only problem with these guys is that they aren't likely to fill our need for a defensive center. On the other hand, they probably all can turn into better players than what we have at the 4/5 so if we make some moves then I'd be fully on board for drafting either of the 3.

Sleeper late round pick: Robert Upshaw

Booted off the team this year and was already a transfer. He is a west coast kid that went to Washington so IT and AB might be able to get to the kid and straighten him out. Other than that, he could legitimately be what we need. He is 21, a bit older than the other listed guys..but is obviously still young with room for growth. Scored at a good rate, rebounded at a good rate and averaged a god-like 4.5 blocks per game. Listed at 7'0 264, so clearly a legit 5. Couldnt shoot a free throw to save his life. Great finisher though and mobile as hell. #1 shot blocker in the nation and his team defense was 10% better in terms of FG% when he was on the court. Numbers could be a bit deceiving since Washington played a zone but everything I see screams rim protecting rebounder with an attitude. In fact, the more I watch and read about him, the more I want the Celtics to grab him..even if we have to trade up a few spots from 28 when the other bigs fly off the board. It'd be considered a reach but I'd pick him at 20. So a trade down from 16 with better guys off the board or a trade up from 28 is perfectly fine with me.

Idk the timing just feels suspicious. There's been mutual interest but he's just now talking about it?

Well its timely with the Olynyk incident. Who knows about the interest since Rondo left. Seems speculative on Woj's part but his reputation precedes himself. Of course, we could always trade Olynyk :takedat:

Hopefully we have a good idea if we can get the center we need

Otherwise we HAVE to get Cauley stein

See my draft outline above ^^. Ive been on the Stein wagon hard but with us out of the lottery and the draft being "big strong", it may be better for us to use our assets elsewhere than paying to move all the way up. Im really liking Upshaw late and, for some reason, Im not sure if Danny wants to pay franchise level asset price for basically filling a role. Yes, we need a shot blocker in the worst way..but outside of Towns..is there a potential star for our franchise that is also a shot blocker? It's a question worth asking. Our pursuit of Jordan will hinge on the draft and the draft will hinge on the lotto outcomes so we really just have to wait for the ping-pong balls for now.

What do you think about Myles Turner if WCS isn't available?

I probably like him the least out of the guys listed for trade-up candidates. He's probably the slowest guy I wrote about..we're never going to be a slow-paced bruising team and he might be the least versatile too. Id be okay with it if was a trade that netted another player but probably not as much if its just assets to move up. Honestly, I waver on him..He is already big and every measurement has continued to be more than the prior but I really want to see him at the combine and in workouts. I have a feeling he'll disappoint in work-outs so if he drops to 16, yeah. He'd probably put up the WOAT results in our famous sprint drill though, Danny seems to love that drill and is a reason why we grabbed Smart:manny:
