Reminds me a little of when Maryland let Ralph Friedgen right before their bowl game, although I think they phrased it as something silly like he "wasn't allowed to coach the team next season". Like Mack, Fridge wasn't ready to retire. They had James Franklin as the HCIW but somehow botched that and he bounced to Vandy.

Took almost a decade for them to recover (i.e. return to respectability, at least) from that mess. Hopefully for UNC and their fans'/alumni's sake, things go a little more smoothly with their next move.

North carolina was 2-9 and 3-9 in the previous two seasons before mack brown returned.

Say what you want but he recruited decent got guys into the league, was always bowl eligible - 6 straight seasons and had and kept good qbs like sam howell and maye who both could have transferred

Maryland’s situation was completely different. Debbie Yow promised Fridge that Franklin was going to be the coach once he retired. Debbie bolted to NC state and the new AD Kevin wanted a fresh start from the previous administration. So he shyt canned Fridge after a 9-4 year and wouldn’t honor Franklin as coach in waiting. Hired Randy Edsall from UCONN and Maryland has been trash ever since.

Mack tried to quit after the first handful of games this season but had a meeting with the players and they wanted him to stay and finish the season.

Fam. Stop it.

This Mack Brown. A legendary coach. You givin this nikka props for making a bowl game and recruiting well like he some bum from a mid major :dahell:

Again, you keep talking about UNC as a program. It’s not about that. UNC has never been a football powerhouse. I live here, everybody here knows that. The boosters and admin thought MACK was going to MAKE them a football power especially since the ACC is so weak overall. Mack got hired off past credibility

Like I said, you can get any old cac to make some bowl games and finish the season 7-5. Don’t make a fukk all recruiting top classes you gotta coach em up too and win games you should and be competitive against strong teams. UNC under him was just as mid as they were without him. That’s why they shyt canned him. Part of the reason he got ran outta Texas eventually.

Mack would at least have one or two losses to bottom tier ACC teams and a bowl loss to go along with his losses to the top tier ACC teams.

The P4 North Carolina schools as a whole has never had a consistent football powerhouse. NC State wasn't even one during the eras of Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson. I have heard theories like the state schools as a whole has never been committed or passionate about football like other southern states. The state has too many DI schools and that makes it hard to keep blue chip in state talent at one school. The state is in a compromised/weird area to attract out of state talent.

Still, with UNC being the flagship school, there are no excuses. The commitment to football has been tepid at best, but that will need to change with the new athletics landscape. Football and TV is what drives these new changes, and if you not trying to eat and get on board, you are getting left behind. Indiana saw the light and got serious about football, and they, like UNC, are considered a "basketball" school. Even with dook and NC State being up the road, and having Wake Forest in state along with schools like App State and ECU, we should do relatively well in recruiting on a regular basis. And that's with the occasional raid from Clemson or one of the SEC schools. I like to think the admins have seen the writing on the wall and are going to be looking to get it right with this hire. The ACC as we know it may not be around much longer, and UNC is an attractive commodity. They need to put themselves in a position to be invited to the grownups table.
