INDIANAPOLIS -- LeBron James doesn't think it's possible to be paid his actual value under the current NBA rules. Because of it he said he's been willing to sacrifice on his contracts.

"What I do on the floor shows my value. At the end of the day, I don't think my value on the floor can really be compensated for anyways because of the (collective bargaining agreement)," James said Friday head of the Miami Heat's game with the Indiana Pacers (7 p.m. ET, ESPN).

"If you want the truth. If this was baseball, it'd be up, I mean way up there."
There is no salary cap in Major League Baseball. James, who took a pay cut to sign with the Heat in 2010, is making $17.5 million this season, which is tied for 13-highest in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant is first at $27.8 million.

In 2011, when he was asked what it would take to get him to play in Europe during the NBA's lockout, James speculated that his play might be worth $50 million a year.
In the last several months the Oklahoma City Thunder and Memphis Grizzlies have traded away star players because they were concerned about their salaries being too costly when a new more stringent luxury tax arrives net season. The Thunder traded away James Harden last fall, and the Grizzlies traded away Rudy Gay this week.
James and teammates Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all took less than the maximum salary when they signed three years ago. That should enable the Heat to keep them together next season, even with the new tax rules. James doesn't think they have gotten credit for that decision.
"I have not had a full max deal yet in my career -- that's a story untold," James said.
"I don't get (the credit) for it. That doesn't matter to me, playing the game is what matters to me. Financially, I'll sacrifice for the team. It shows for some of the top guys, it isn't all about money. That's the genuine side of this, it's about winning. I understand that."
Forbes recently estimated James earns $40 million per year in endorsements and sponsorships, thanks to deals with Nike, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, State Farm and Samsung.
James and Bosh are earning $17.5 million from the Heat this season, while Wade is making $17.1 million. Had they taken max deals in 2010, each could've made just under $20 million this season. It would've cost the Heat an additional $8 million in luxury taxes this season, roughly $12 million next season and they might not have been able to add players like Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller, Shane Battier and Ray Allen to the roster.
The Heat, however, would be subject to what is known as the "repeater" tax starting in 2014-15 if they keep James, Wade and Bosh together because they would be over the luxury tax for four years in a row. In that case, they would pay a tax rate that is currently more than four times the current dollar-for-dollar rate. James, Wade and Bosh do have opt-out clauses in their contracts in the summer of 2014, however.
"I think teams understand that you need three guys to do big things; the big three thing is pretty cool if you can get it," James said. "To keep teams like this together you may have to take even less because of the new CBA. I guess we'll find out."

How many stars are willing to do this? Lebron is and even when Wade declines, they will probably add a young horse inside or on the perimeter to remain competitive for many more years.

They will win the next 2 titles making things tough. I could see Wade cashing out somewhere else

Same people saying this are the ones who said they weren't signing at all 3 years ago.

It was believable they'd all sign together in 2010 to try it and see if they could win which they did...I think if they dont win another title by end of 13-14 then most definitely 2 of the 3 will move on...They won a title together i think that'll be enough for them to be satisfied and try something else where they can maximize there earnings without having to take a paycut...

I think they'll be broken up even if they win this year and next...

I think if they win the next 2 it'll be easy for 2 of them to walk away and go somewhere else,at that point nothing else prove in Miami...I could see all 3 opting out but i would bet if one stayed it would be Wade...

can't hate on it but if the best guy in the league is taking cuts, wouldn't this fukk the money up for everyone else when the next CBA comes up?? if i was an owner, why should i pay a superstar max money when he's nowhere near the talent level of Bron but superstar talent nonetheless...wouldn't that sort of justify me bargaining to get the cap lowered some more?

This is the key. He makes so much money off the court and as he said the max salary and new luxury tax is so stiffling that it's realistic that he could take less money. I for one am quite pleased to see the ridiculous max salary back fire like this.

In his current position, he can play at a high level without burning himself out, keep on winning because he has the best team, and maintain his brand for several years.

IN pure economic terms, his paycut could be a good investment.

Miami will have the most cap space in the nba summer '14 if they all opt out

They can resign lebron and bring in younger talent
