I think it's worth hearing them out. And then making a decision.
But a simple question is, do you believe there is animosity towards gays in the black community?
Yes. I think it comes from a bunch of different sources.
Religion-“Dey goin to hell!”
Biology-“It’s unnatural!” Although I think this is false b/c homosexuality has been observed in a wide variety of species. Not saying we can or should generalize animals behavior to humans but I’ve never understood the unnatural argument. I would think just based on probability it would be common sense to assume that not everybody is going to be born with the same exact sexual composition.
Culture-PSN “fakkit” culture. Its funny b/c anti-homosexuality is both an old and new phenomenon. Various cultures around the world seemed to recognize those outside of heteronormative binaries like the Hijras in India and the concept of a third gender in some indigenous cultures, and/or nobody batting an eye at it in Ancient European cultures. I think the spread of the Judeo-Christian tradition, and emphasis on childbirth as a tool of power (expand, expand, expand), plays a larger role in the “fakkit hate” culture than any biological justifications.
Race-We still haven’t been able to establish healthy heteronormative imagery for ourselves, so isolating and consolidating is apart of our...
survival. It’s frustrating to have had black masculinity and femininity attacked since we care into contact with Europeans. And then have our concept of self continue to be attacked by associating black masculinity and femininity with homosexual themes that were placed on us during slavery such as buck-breaking and lies about black women being masculine.
A lot of homophobia in our community comes from our sexuality already being threatened and that results in a backlash in some cases.
At least these are just my observations. I also know plenty of blks who are the most supportive of the LGBTQ community even more than other races as well.
